Lost my short USMC...

Long story short, I learned to double check the button on the retention snap when you sheath your knife in the leather sheaths. I went on a nice little hike with my dog today while the weather was nice, and at the end of my hike I realized my short usmc was gone. Must have fallen out while I was climbing up a rock or running after my dog with the retention strap not buttoned all the way. Really bummed too because it was my first knife and my dad got it for me quite a few years ago. Anyway I was wondering on getting another short usmc or a mark I to replace it, and where I might acquire one for a reasonable price (tight finances- you know how it is). Anyway thanks for your help in advance

I'd check around here, if I were you. Also, you might try military surplus stores. Ebay is a possibility. I'm sorry you lost your knife.

Thanks for the help guys. I was also wondering what were the opinions on the mark I vs the short kabar

Don't own either, but I'd take the M1 cos I don't have to saw off the top guard and I like a full flat grind. Looks like best their belt knife offering in my opinion... Then they made the "Gamestalker", now I need both.

On the main topic.. I've found that built in retention tabs on the tactical sheaths don't work against a draw pull. It keeps it from falling out under normal conditions but when pulling on the knife, once the bottom of the belt loop meets your belt, the force from pulling up on the knife is enough to bend the tabs back and release it.

Better hope you never find yourself in a fight with Toshiro Mifune:

He'll pull your own sword from your belt! O.O

If you are looking for a different Kabar product, then why not try out the Bk-14/15/or 16...fits well in the hand, a good 3/16ths thick, full flat grind. Great warranty.

Have and use both... lots.

The Short KA-BAR is lighter and better balanced (a lot better balanced) than the Mk-1. It's narrower/thicker blade lends itself to smaller tasks yet is plenty big enough for heavy use. It also only needs a little work in the form of trimming off the top guard to make it civilized.

The Mk-1, on the other hand, is an outstanding slicing tool, but the broader/full flat grind tends to make the blade a wee bit flexible or springy, but not a problem for most slicing chores (just don't split w/it). Its biggest fault is the handle-heavy balance combined w/ a polished leather (see slick) handle that can be problematic if not constantly aware of it. (I've got a "fix" in w/ Toooj... ;) ) A little grinding on the steel knob pommel and a little wire-brush and Sno-seal on the handle does a lot to mitigate the handling issues.

Have and use the short kabar all the time. Tough as nails, holds an edge well, and has a nice light balanced feel in your hand. Love it.
