Lost My Traveling Companion

Back in the early 90's I happened across a Brookstones Catalog Store in the DFW Area, I spent $19 on a pen, not just any pen, a Fisher Bullet Space Pen.

This pen was my traveling companion, it traveled the world with me, Europe, Asia, and the US, I wrote many reports, corrected many exams and signed hundreds of certificates, toward the end of my traveling in the late 90's I decided to retire my pen and bought a new one at Office Max for about $15.

With my older pen stashed away, my new pen became my new pal, it went everywhere, played countless games of tic tac toe with my daughter while waiting for our dinners to arrive, drew more brilliant ideas on cocktail napkins than I remember.

Hell it was filling in the void left by retiring my first pen, everyone knew three things Ted always had was a knife, a flashlight and a pen, it actually enjoyed a little notoriety, people loved it cause you could write at any angle with it.

Than one day the unthinkable happened, I lost my new pen, no it couldn't be lost, must be misplaced. I went to pull the old one out of retirement and like the good friend it always was, it was there.

Two weeks later my wife found my pen in the wash,(I looked everywhere for it, the car, under the bed, in the dirty laundry,(my wife said for all the lookin' I did if I just would have done a load of laundry I could have saved myself 2 weeks of anguish).

With my new pen back in hand I ceremoniously replaced the the retired pen in its box and on the shelf next to my bed, all was well, until 2 days later I lost the friggin' pen again, no worry, I pulled out old faithful, I can always count on that one, I'd never lose the original :footinmou , well 2 days later I did, since then I've torn everything apart countless times, and retraced my steps to the point where I don't know if I'm commin' or goin'.

2 days ago I broke down and went to Staples and bought a 3rd new pen, but I'm still bummed out about the original one, the new on don't feel right, I haven't written anything prophetic with it or designed a new knife locking mechanism, hell I haven't even won the restaurant dots championship, or a single game of tic tac toe.

What do ya think am I being to sentimental?

Haven't you ever been fond of something besides knives and family,(some family more so than others). ;)

I lose my Fisher Bullet at least once a week. As I write this I am without my Chrome Bullet. Lost it somewhere. I am using the old Black Bullet as a backup. It's a never ending vicious circle. Loss Chrome, use Black, lose Black, find Chrome. Over and over and over.

I spend an average of 30-45 minutes looking for my "stuff" every day. Even when I think I put it in the same place:( It aggrevates me and consumes me till my item is found, which usually happens.

I understand, totally. I like my things. I somewhat believe and for a prof. to say this is wierd, but I believe that a small part of each individual is in the items they own.
Makes sense to me. That is why when someone passes and leaves me an item of theirs, I feel them when I touch the item. Not like a psychic, I wouldn't cheapen the sensation.

Just as odors elicit memories; these objects do the same thing.

There is a reason that you feel the way you do. It might be beyond our comprehension, presently, but it is there. Someone will write their doctoral thesis on the subject as we grow to understand the brain more.

Your normal, just some other's brain functions haven't evolved into this mode yet.:)

Sentimentality, how can a degree be assigned to it? No, you are not too sentimental in my way of thinking!

Best regards,

Prof. Ed

Hi All-

Just as long as we don't occasionally lose our firearms around the house, it's cool. This has been a struggle with me too...for things like car keys, cellular telephone, knife, etc. The only solution is to insert, build (or have built) a small, lockable caddy into your closet. One must resist the urge to set items down anyplace besides the caddy. I'll let you know how this plan works...

I have a nightly ritual where I empty the pockets and place everything on the nightstand for the next mornings choices, but I still find myself saying,"Alright, I didn't go anywhere I haven't left this spot, where the hell is it?"

Invariably it's either behind my ear or clipped to my shirt or necklace, I do have a bad habit of putting things into things,(like boxes or drawers), but then my memory ain't what it used to be :(   , what was I talkin' about? ........Oh yea, losin' stuff, but eventually after retracing my steps enough I did find what I was lookin' for.

All this sounds so normal to me, I loose and find things all the time, not long ago I found the astronaut model space pen that I had lost long ago (it was in the pocket of a jacket that I had not used for a while. what I loose or misplace most often is coffee, I drink a couple of cups a day, at work I fill my mug in the morning and keep it around taking small sips throughout the day, as I move around (I´m in computer support and also attend meetings, etc.) I take it with me but sometimes I forget about it, so I have to retrace my steps and find it somewhere.

Regarding being fond of things, I´m fond of lots of old stuff perhaps most noticeably (other than pocket knives) an old Hohner Marine Band B flat harmonica, a Pelikan 250 fountain pen and that very old kazoo in my pocket.

It is such a bummer when you lose an old friend. However, isn't great when you crack out your winter coat when it gets cold enough and find that your 20 year old stockman was just taking a rest for the summer in your coat pocket.

That's happened before too, Took a pair of canoes out after they had been sitting out back for 4 years, found my Blackie Collins Joggin' Buddy looped around the crossbar. :D I was happy.

There is one knife I'd pay a lot of money for: my first AFCK which I carried for years but finally lost. Sometimes, I still stop and wonder where it is now and hope that someone is taking good care of it and appreciates it. I've been through several since and they're all very well-made, very nice. But you never forget your first AFCK.

I've never understood the Space Pen thing, though. What? As if NASA might call at any moment and need you to fly an emergency space shuttle mission. Good thing you've got your Space Pen with you!

If gravity ever fails, at least you'll still be able to sign your restaurant check. That is, in fact, why I specifically don't carry a Space Pen. I'm secretly hoping that gravity will fail... right in the middle of an expensive lunch and they'll just have to comp me becasue the pen doesn't work. The last thing I want to do in that situation is save the day, "Oh, no problem. I have my Space Pen right here." If there is such a thing as a free lunch, I don't want a Space Pen to ruin it.

You're no crazier than many of us. I have ritualized emptying pockets at the end of the day so that I don't have to search for my pen, flashlight, money clip or knife in the morning. Glasses have become a lost cause, but as long as the emergency backup pair is safely in my bag (3 pair, 1 for each possible bag) I can usually find my specs.

The rounded nature of the bullet pen causes them to leave my pockets never to be seen again... :(

I understand... I lose my bic sticks all the time!

I too have lost a space pen (gold plated too :() and also a SAK soldier through their slipping out of my pocket...

They should make trouser pockets like pillow cases with that little flap on the inside to stop the pillow falling out, maybe that would help stop things falling out

i feel your pain. seriously i do. but i have found that i will not lose my space pen if i carry it horizontally in the bottom of my right rear pocket. other people might have different experiences but i used to lose them all the time until i started carrying there. it's not as comfortable as a front pocket but it is more secure. by the way, i've been meaning to take a new edc picture; everything except that pen is attached to me by a case or clip or lanyard looped around or clipped onto a belt loop. so far it's working. the last thing i lost was a space pen that i lent to someone for a minute and then they lost it behind a tv at work. :( Now i say no when someone asks me if i have a pen or i don't let them leave my sight with it.

Pete

(edit: actually it's a very small lamy that is slightly thicker but shorter than a space pen. i like it because i can open it one handed. )

I haven't lost anything out of my front slack pockets yet after I started doing this.

I put my wallet in my right front pocket and my knife under the wallet (or in front of the wallet depending on the size of the knife). This prevents slippage when sitting down or slouching. In my left front pocket are my keys and my SAK. I always used to lose my SAK before I had my keys weighting down the slack pocket when I sat down (be careful as you might lose it on the car seat when the keys are out).

Does anyone elso do this?
I just wanted to share.

Mike

I carry so much stuff that I just leave it in the pockets and transfer it to the next pair of pants the following morning. This ahs not stopped me from losing things that had (still have) great sentimental value to me, usually knives (since I carry them more (and more of them) than anything else. Next would be pens. I sually carry some cheap pen nowadays cause I lose about 1/day. Most of them I find again, but not all.

And as far as pens going through the wash, well, that's why I don't use rollerballs.

Get a Mission Wallet.

Holds the Space pen just fine, and room for a small SAK and ARC too, plus whatever your choice of pouch stuffings.

I got lucky a couple years ago, there was a travel bag and acces store closing out. Spce Pens for $4, and refills for $0.75.

Gollnick,

Most of us won't ever fly to the moon. Some of us, though, have to write in less than perfect conditions. As a newsguy, I learned many years ago that ink freezes and ballpoints don't work in the rain.

Mechanical or regular pencils do, and so do Space Pens. That's why a Bullet Pen travels in my trouser pocket every day, 365 a year.

I don't always have a flat horizontal surface to write on, it's nice when a pen writes vertically, and overhead.

Get the mission wallet. My holds a space and leatherman squirt with photon II. It's my bare mininmum EDC.

I agree with the mission wallet idea. That zip pouch for money, credit cards, fresnal mirror, and drivers licence, is good. I keep my Fisher space pen, spare truck key, arc aaa flashlight, and kershaw scallion knife in the side pouches. :)
