Lucky for me Maisy found it again !
Today I decided to spend most of my walk off trail ~
Wild edibles are scarce this time of year but I did find lots of Flat-topped Coral(clavariadelphus truncatus), although I'm pretty sure that is what these are I'm still always wary with fungi !
I picked one and knowing these are edible raw figured I'd try it. I have to say it was not bad at all, hardly any taste other than a slight sweetness. I only tried a little as your body can still have a reaction to fungi that others might find edible.
I then came across this tree and had to put some of this resin to use~
I decided to make a torch, to ignite the resin I'd need some other tinder that would take a light from my ferro rod. Managed to find some dry Cedar bark in this otherwise soaked forest !
A few minutes later I had this all ready to go !
( It was at this point that I'd dropped my knife but wasn't going to realise for about another 30-40 minutes !)
I lit the torch~
After putting the torch out I wandered off clambering over fallen trees and crossing little streams that ran through the forest~
I reached a spot and decided to do a little more knife work....when I found an empty sheath my heart sank !
This knife meant a lot to me for a number of reasons~
A) It was my first ever custom.
B) It was a gift from John ( JK Knives ) for winning a competition on his forum if I remember right.
C) It's a great all round knife !
I quickly made my way back trying to remember where I had walked, this was damn tough as most of it had been off trail. It was amazing how much I'd remembered as I traced my steps. I was spotting fungi that I'd remembered, Deer scat and certain trees that had caught my eye as I'd clambered over them.
I eventually traced my way right back to the torch site and had still not seen the knife, I now figured it was lost forever and was just about to scout around one last time when I saw Maisy sniffing at something......now you tell me if you'd have found this !
Yeah Maisy done good today !!!!
