Lost people walk in circles

We're like homing pidgons... we circle until we recognize something.

It's not just walking. planes, boats and cars all do it too. Not trains though, wonder why...

That's from people packing GIANT survival knives on their hips!

That's why I carry one on each hip. :D

If I need to slow down and conserve energy, I hang another one right over the middle of my backside. :p

I was lost in a cave once and it was somewhat distressing we could not find our way out the end we came in on or the one we were supposed to go out of.

After crawling thru tiny holes and going in and out chambers we did FINALLY find the hole we crawled IN thru so I guess we did a version of the circle thing thankfully!

That would really suck! I've done a teensy bit of spelunking, and getting lost in tiny areas would be most disconcerting. But that's also why I keep a spare glowstick around. :D

Me and my two kids got lost in the woods and landed up walking in circles. Having little kids panic makes you feel like a bad parent. I was able to calm them and get our way out. But the fear on there faces lead me to this forum and others like it. Due to that experience my kids also learned some basics as well before going into the woods.

That is why I always take my dog with me on a walk... he pulls me in a more or less straight line. If I led our walks, we would never get back to the vehicle! :D

Uhhh ... that's what a compass is for. Why would anyone go out in the bush without a compass?

Because sometimes you become overconfident especially when you become familiar with an area.

Yep. Been there. It's one of the ways I learned to carry a compass. Even one of the little cheap button compasses are a help, and they're not much to carry. Good thing to teach the kids, too.

I'm sure that was a rough spell! Kudos for working to learn some new stuff to stay safe out there and probably have more fun.

Simple test. Get in a field, aim at something. Close your eyes and walk a few hundred feet.

Then open your eyes and see if you walked straight.

Now extend this to a few miles.

But it work on deers too ;)

This is why search teams often leave string lines with arrows towards help on searched areas, Because lost people will often return to an area that has already been searched.

+1 on always bringing a compass. Even if I dont have my larger orienteering compass I keep a little one in my survival kit and on a winter bow hunt I became lost in woods I thought i was familiar with. If i haddnt stopped and checked the compass I would have gone miles in the wrong direction in freezing rain at nightfall. thanks to the compass I got to out in a short time.
