Like everyone else with internet access, I go through the HI archives to look for tips and tricks that were missed or forgotten. One thing that kept coming up was Yvsa's mention of Ballistol and how it's such a versatile oil. There are lubricants, rust removers, horn/wood/leather treatments, and bore cleaners that are all slightly better than Ballistol, but Yvsa mentioned it did so many jobs so well that it was a great all-in-one product (or I misread
).
Well, I bought it for my khukuris, but love it even more for my honeydo list. It's brought dead pruning shears back to life, cleaned rust and crud from my barbecue grill, and has breathed life into a sticking lawn-mower throttle. Today, though, it dried water-logged gas in my mower's tank!
The mower wouldn't start after nearly a month of rain and when it finally did, it had an erratic pulse and belched out way too much smoke and gas fumes. Was 80% done when it got back to putting three or four times and dying on each pull. Went off to clean the grill and remembered drying wet gas in some of Ballistol's online ad-copy, so I squirted some in the gas tank and went back to grill cleaning. Went to the mower afterwards and it roared to life with a strong, fast, and even pulse the way mowers are supposed to sound! Holy katzenjammers! The wetness did get the mower two more times (it just stalled out), but it restarted instantly with that healthy mower sound.
So thanks so much, Yvsa! It was one of the biggest highlights of my day.
