Well it's official, I don't think I'm ever going to win the lottery!!!
Desperate times call for desperate measures!!!
So I've decided to make my fortune by finding buried treasure, figure it should only take me a week or so...
Any suggestions as to a good Metal Detector for a beginner, soon gonna be rich guy???

I don't know about metal detectors themselves but if you go to the lawns in Central Park in NYC on a Monday morning you can pick up a lot of loose change that people lost over the weekend. :D

dude , I love searching for goodies , Travel Channel had like 4 hours of it on last night , I love to watch that sort of stuff.
After my old metal detector got ripped off , I bought a cheapie on eBay that works about as good , for what i'm doing.
Best places ? If you live by an ocean your in luck , there are literally buttloads of pages regarding beach treasure hunting , parks are good too.
I've found mostly loose change , a cheap wedding band , and many pieces of junk (sometimes to entertain myself I pretend the metal junk is ancient lost artifacts) hey but who knows , one day I may find something worth while, maybe a cool knife or a good piece of jewelry.
Try it out man , it's fun and can be profitable.
Only warning is , carry a small trowel shovel of sorts and dont make a mess or the park people might get mad at ya.
Have fun.

No need for a metal detector. Simply find a plam tree, walk ten paces in any direction, dig, and repeat until your fortune is found.

If the pirate who buried the treasure had the name "Stumpy", perhaps his ten paces and your ten paces would be different. :D

I began metal detecting in the 1980s and used metal detectors made by Whites and Fisher Research Laboratory. I like the Fisher CZ-5 QuickSilver I bought used on eBay.

Make sure you choose a detector which uses common batteries and is lightweight. Your arm will get tired after a few minutes of swinging a heavy metal detector.

Check out the Fisher web site at: http://www.fisherlab.com

There are several web sites and forums for metal detecting, but I am unsure if BladeForums.com rules allow me to share that information with you by posting their URLs.

Metal detecting is a great hobby and can more than pay for itself with a few good finds. Happy hunting.

Why do you need a metal detector? I find all kinds of free money at the bottom of fountains and in those wooden boxes inside churches!

Chris I like your style, how's that prison food???
Thanks to all who responded, the search goes on; I'll update you all when I'm rich........

I have a 35 year old Garrett non discriminator. Is old and heavy, but has found a lot of stuff. Even found the prop off my dads boat once when the repair guy didn't put the pin back in the locknut. Had to rent an underwater coil, but turned out to be worth it. Fortunately in a shallow channel and he knew fairly close where he lost it. It still works good

Found two gold rings one day about 30 minutes apart. Thought I was being cool and had a nugget charm made for the wife for $25.... problem was....she didnt have a chain heavy enough to carry it..... $160 bucks later she was happy.

The new ones are so modern they will tell you what you have found before you start digging. You will have fun with one and it will pay for itself over time.

Thanks Parnass, one of your links has put me in touch with a local metal detecting club!!! I'm not saying hold your breath but watching this space couldn't hurt!!!

It could be drinks all round, but will it be water or champagne???

Pack Rat at $160 you know you got off light. You need to buy your wife some of those CUSTOM knives.............get spending brother it's only money!

I need a detector that goes out, searches, knows what it's found, sells it and gives me the money while'st I sit and have a few beers!!!

Cheers.....

 Well thanks alot guys!!!

I already spend way too much $$$ on the stuff I see you guys post about and then I go and get. Now I've just found something else to blow my cash on. I just placed an order for a Garrett Ace 250!!! I've spent most of this week and dang near all of last weekend looking at stuff others have found on detecting forums and it's driving me nutz. It looks like something I've just got to try. Now I'll be out of the house more and away from the wife, so thanks guys:thumbup: :D :)

Metals detectors take time and work. Find a place with lots of casinos and rake in the dough. Don't believe me? Watch their advertising!

I'm thinking of getting one to search for wrought iron. Its worth its weight in gold ( to knifemakers anyway).
