Love at First Site...

I got my regular E-mail from A.G.Russell the other day. I’m looking through the “What’s New” section, and I see this new lock back from them and it was love at first site. But there was something about this knife that seemed very familiar to me. The Damascus looked great, but it was the curves of the handle that really turned me on. It reminded me of a cross between a Jess Horn style folder and an old style derringer handle, just beautifully executed

I mostly buy handmades now with stag handles, but I want this knife stag or no stag. I figure my love of stag goes back to my earliest childhood memories of Roy Roger’s stag handle Colts. Hey, give me a break I’m old and it could be worse, I could have got hooked on boots with eagles on them.

I know a lot of the folks here are more into Tactical style knives and a lot of them have as many curves as a brick. I'm really not putting anyone down for what they like, it's just that I love curves, on my knives and on women.

Does anyone know where this style handle evolved from?

I have to agree with you PhilL, that is a beauty, and damascus at a price like that to boot. It seems to good to be true.

As far as the handle goes, sorry I don't know where the style evolved. I have seen other handles like it over the years, but can't remember exactly where.

Keith.

That knife was in a magazine ad I saw for for AG Russell several weeks ago. I immediately scoured the AG Russell web site looking for it. No luck. I saw it last week when I was checking AG Russell's site to suggest another knife for a forum member. I guess the ad came out before the latest web site update.

I also really like that handle. I think it looks great with the wood scales. It certainly is a refreshing alternative to large tactical folders with synthetic handle materials. And the blade is san mai construction as well. Let us know if you get one Phil!

hi all,
i got to handle this knife last week while i was at the store.not my style,im not real fond of the handle shape.BUT this knife is well made, its comfortable, got a pretty good edge, and the one i handled had no blade play.
Phil- go for it.I think you'll be satisfied.

Para, I'm surprised I thought you only looked at knives made by ABS Master Smiths?

MO, I'm kind of glad you don't care for it because if you did I'd have to rethink my opinion. I know I would be happy if I ordered any knife from AGR, they guarantee it.

I'm still looking for some feedback on this handle design, not if I should buy it or not?
Does anyone have a clue?

Thats a neat knife.
The handle style reminds me of some fixed blades I've seen.I know I've seen it on at least one other knife ahnd several that were very similar. Some choppers have a handle that drops back like that, but I' keep thinking of a fixed blade I saw on the cover of a knife book.I'll look around and see if I can't find it.
I think a variation of that is common in fighting style knives. The swell at the back is helpful for switching grips I think.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

The basic shape was drawn from memory of a mid 19th Century knife seen over 40 years ago. I really did not like the blade so I just used the most popular blade style of all time to go with the handle. You are not the only person to like the knife. We will be out shortly and have already reordered. Thanks for asking. A. G.

and thank you for responding A.G., and I'm not surprised that a lot of people like this knife, it's a beauty with classic lines. It would be a shame if the younger collectors couldn't appreciate it.
As I mentioned before it reminds me a bit of a Jess Horn folder, was this the design that Jess got from Bob Loveless? I also see the influence of this shaped handle in the works of Brian Lyttle (The Edge movie knife) as well as in some of J.W. Smith's folders. Perhaps Bernard Levine could shed a little more lite on the history of this style handle?
For me not only are the curves pleasing, but I can tell just by looking how comfortable this must feel in the hand.

Pardon me.
