Love my BK2, need some help

Hello there!

This is my first post, but I've done a lot of reading here. I did search, but didn't find this specific issue. I'm sorry if I'm reposting!


I love my Becker BK2, and I've been working at sharpening. I've tried a few things, and the lanksy system seemed to work pretty darn well, even if the clamp kind of stinks. The diamond rods are nice.

I also tried a WorkSharp. This is an interesting tool, and it worked great for my machete, but it stripped the point off of my CRKT Sting and totally ruined it, and it rounded my BK2 tip a little.

Needless to say, I'm done with the Worksharp.

The Sting isn't a huge loss, I never really liked.

The tip of my BK2 however I would like to fix. It's not ruined, but I'd like to get it back to where it was before use. I have the lanksy diamond rods. I do not have a shop or any place to monkey around with making tools. I'm a renter.

Any advice would be appreciated

You could strip the blade and grind the top of the blade down to make a point.

But at the same time, the bk2 is a knife to be used. I'd just use it and be happy. And get some thrift store knives to practice with that worksharp.

Thank you! I actually already stripped the top with the worksharp just for fun. Are you saying if I simply grind down the tip with the 80 grit it will make a new point for me?

I'm new to this kind of maintenance in particular, but I'm handy and I learn quickly. I'm not worried about keeping the bk2 pretty, I just want to be able to maintain it properly. Thanks again!
 
You grind on the spine side of the tip at an angle to form a new point. You don't really have to strip the coating first you can simply grind it off on the stone.

I have and use the Ken Onion edition of the Work Sharp--if you are rounding the tips of your knives, you are pulling the knives too far as you finish your sharpening stroke. As you go from heel to tip, end the sharpening stroke with the tip in the middle of the abrasive band and let go of the power trigger. If you keep a consistent angle and don't twist the blade, the tip should stay pointy... You could probably break my it back to a point that way too. Read the manual and watch the video--they are helpful. Good luck man.
 
As mentioned you're likely pulling it thru to far or lifting the handle too much as you approach the tip...keep the edge perpendicular to the belt and stop with the tip on the middle of the belt and that should help...

I also decided to trade in the worksharp for the ken onion edition. That is one heck of a machine. Now that I have my form much better, I have knives sharp enough to shave with. Love this machine.

Huh, I'm surprised you were still using the old version.

Machine sharpening is fast, but extremely unforgiving. General rule of thumb with any new sharpener: Practice on cheap knives first.

Just be mindful that the angle you set machine at won't always be the true angle you're sharpening at. Thickness at the spine will determine the true angle. Example running the bk2 thru at 25° will be an actual angle of 20-22.5° due to how thick it is...


Also check out the blade grinding attachment now that you have a ko version...Will take your knives to the next level of sharp.
