Love my new cowboy boots

It's been way too long since I had a pair of cowboy boots, so a few weeks ago while in Dallas I bought me a pair. When in Rome.........

I picked up a pair of Ferrini Ropers made from Lizard, and they are easily as comfy as my running shoes. I won't take them off. I like them because I can wear them with a tie and slacks to work and they look great, or, I can wear them with jeans. Just enough style so I don't look like I bought everything from Macy's. Well, at least not the shoes. :}~

I'm now obsessed over getting a more traditional pair, but it seems as if the pointed toes aren't as comfortable as the rounded roper toe. I've tried about a dozen pair of various brands and widths, but none are as remotely comfortable as my current pair.

Any of you folks have experience with this?

Thanks
Aaron

Wait 'til you have a pair custom made!

Most of the boots in my collection were made by Gary Tucker of Las Vegas (long retired). When he built the "lasts" for my first pair, he spent over 20 minutes measuring each foot.

Every pair of boots he made for me fit like a glove* and I could wear them from early morning to late at night and forget I was wearing boots. I was more comfortable and secure scrambling around Red Rock Canyon in a pair of Gary's boots than I was in good quality hiking shoes.

*(...too bad they didn't fit like a boot! RIMSHOT!)

Cockroachfarm, can you ballpark the cost on a pair of custom boots? Can this be done for someone with both wide feet and high arches?

I've got a pair of the pointed toe type, and indeed you are correct, they are NOT comfy at all. Actually, they hurt like hell, and I feel like I'm wearing a woman's pair of high-heels.

Hence I only wear them when the yearly rodeo comes to my town.
I need to get myself the rounded ropers.

Haven't had a new pair made in at least 6 years, but all the ones I have went for between $400 and $1,200 - depending on the leather and the embellishments such as heel or toe foxing, etc. The moment you first put them on, you KNOW they are worth every penny they cost.

Wide or narrow feet, high or low arches - when a good bootmaker measures you properly for a wooden last (the form around which your boots are constructed), those boots will fit perfectly.

I've thought about this for a while, next time I'm in Texas I'm getting a custom pair made. I have very wide feet and a wide instep, so getting any comfortable shoes is a pain in the *ss.

Do you have to go to a boot maker to have wooden lasts made? Or can a podiatrist do something like this?

I'm not sure. I think a western bootmaker would probably know more about various little 'adjustments' that he has to build into the wooden last for the type of footwear he makes.

When my bootmaker in Vegas retired, he sold the business to a female bootmaker who also kept the name, but when I Google it, nothing comes up. Maybe she's closed the business or changed the name.

I forgot to mention - when you first try on your custom boots, they should 'slip' just a bit in the heel. After wearing them a few times, the boot will form itself so perfectly to your foot you'll forget you're wearing them!

BTW, anyone here have any experience with custom bootmakers? Names and location, please.
