New guy here. Many years ago I had a Sebenza and sold it, along with other non-CRK knives when illness hit the family. The one knife I really missed over the years was the CRK.

This week I received a large, carbon fiber inlay Sebenza. Frankly speaking my ZT's, Spyderco, and Benchmade knives seem less exciting. Truly, I'm not trolling. I certainly would keep some non-CKR faves. I'm not trying to insult other people's brand passion.

But overall I'd like to own a few more CRK knives, and the sale of the bulk of my other brand knives collection would help fund that.

Has anyone else reduced their collection to concentrate on a particular brand, or even a Holy Grail knife?

I think many knife knuts get to a point where after years of trying and using many knives ... from different brands to different styles ...

and I personally think that is kind of a stage in of the love of knives ... when you find what works best for your uses and what you find you like ... for many reasons ...

and I think many do sell or pass on knives to aquire and use more of the knives they have come to love ...

so I can understand exactly where you are ... I still enjoy several brands and styles ... but in all honesty about 3 or 4 brands ... and anywhere from a couple models to maybe 4 or 5 models of those are what I really use and reach for 90% of the time.

So several sit or are being traded/gifted/or sold.

It is something you will have to sort out for yourself. Really all you need is 1 Sebenza , but getting more and variety is certainly fun. As for selling your other knives-It is a good way to raise funds for something you want, but I would be hesitant to sell knives that you can't replace too quickly. You may find you miss them and it will cost you dear to replace. Only you can say if that could be a problem. Can't imagine too many people complaining about a nice CRK collection.

I wouldn’t recommend selling off all your other knives. You’ve picked them out for a reason, sort through them and sell the ones that absolutely need to go, keep the rest and save up for more CRK’s. I enjoy the variety of several brands along with my CRK’s. I’ve been carrying two knives when I knew that carrying a CRK each day works for me.

All I can say is feel free to send me a list of what your looking to get rid of. Share the love!

Sellem off and get more crk. Seriously not much better until you go custom heat treatment folders.

Im done with ZTs and Benchmades. However im still getting spydercos. Crk and spydercos are among my favorite users.

I say don’t sell...yet.

Make sure your absolutely certain first. Then, if you know what you want, go for it! I respect folks that can limit themselves to just a few knives they absolutely love.

One of the main reasons I haven’t started selling things off is that I know once some of my pieces are gone, they’re probably never coming back.

Tough call. Variety is the spice of life and all, and, indeed, I love pretty much all the knives in my humble collection – that's why I bought them, after all – but there's a reason that I have nine CRKs (ten when the Lunar Landing, er, lands), while the most that I have from any other knife maker is three.

Personally speaking if I were you I'd sell the pieces that you're not in thrall with anymore and use the money to buy more CRKs. Spyderco, ZT and Benchmade are great brands, no doubt, but not particularly rare. If you find that you regret selling a particular piece, most likely you'll be able to pick it up again down the road.

And in the meantime you'll have another CRK. ;-)

Regards,
Adam

Given that you're planning on keeping your favorites from other brands, why not. If you want to sell some knives that don't thrill you to buy knives that do, who am I to argue.
It took me a few tries (4); but I finally have a CRK that I LIKE. Enough so that I've been considering buying another CRK... funded, of course, by the sale of knives that just don't do it for me. I may not do it; but the fact that I'm considering it is noteworthy to me.
If you had said you were going to sell all your other knives, I'd have said no. Finally having a CRK I like doesn't mean I've drunk the Kool-Aid

If you sell literally everything else, you’re opening the door to possible regret. If you sell most of everything else but keep your just a few of your most favorite others, I don’t think you’ll be opening that door. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

Thanks all for the advice. I guess I've been making it too hard on myself to evaluate where i'm going with this hobby. I'm coming up with some useful, personal guidelines thanks to the great input from Blade Forum members.

I have 12 ZT's, 5 Kershaw 9 Spyderco, 3 Brous, 4 Cold Steel, 6 CKRT, 2 Emerson, 5 Quartermaster, 6 Benchmade, 2 Fox, 2 SOG, 1 Lionsteel, 1 DPX and one old Case bowie style knife. Not a big collection by most collector's standards.

Step 1: Sort out, to keep knives, I have a personal connection with. Such as my Dad's Case knife (he used to hike the White Mountains with), or my first Spyderco etc.

Step 2: Sort out and possibly keep the knives that have been discontinued, therefore likely to be irreplaceable. Those sprint runs of "discontinued knives" drive me crazy ;) So who knows these days what is irreplaceable regarding production knives? I'm talking to you ZT and Spyderco ;)

Step 3: Sort out, to sell, the large knives I'd be unlikely to carry (unless there is really something unique about them). Case in point the Quartermaster Strickland Tanto. Sometimes weirdly, wicked looking knives speak to me! Though I'd never carry it.

So in the end I don't think I'll have much in the "get rid of" category than I thought. I think the Brous are going, the Lionsteel, the Cold Steel, the Kershaw, CKRT and the Emersons.

It is not going to give me a big war chest for CRK purchases. I may gift a few to my hunter/retired military friends. But my goal is to add at least 2 or 3 more CRK over time by saving up.

One last thing. I'm finding it helpful to have digital pictures of all my knives, in a group, by brand. This way I don't have to have them spread out making the spouse angry ;)

Thanks again for the help! I hope to contribute once I get better at collecting.

Glad you're not rushing into it. CRK's are great, I've sold most other knives to pay for them myself, but I wouldn't make myself sell off any just because they aren't CRK. But welcome to the family, and show us your CRK! :D

I concentrate on several knife makers/brands. So I get it. But it has happened over time for me - I just get better at knowing what I like and focus in those areas. I still have 3 or 4 single pieces from 3 or 4 makers, but generally I have several to many (or many many) from the ones I focus on.

CRK is a new area of interest for me. While I won't be getting rid of anything to specifically buy a few more, there was already a few things I was trying to sell that may buy me a few CRKs.

I have used brand loyalty as the great control in the gear hobby. Find a brand you like, buy the things from that brand that you really enjoy and/or best fit your needs, and you will have a natural control on excess.

Expensive taste in knives, lights, pens and bags can really get out of hand if you jump on impulse buys every time your favorite gear blogger dropped a new post or video.

After trying several brands, I’ve limited myself to CRK knives, and have never regretted that decision.

I am fortunate I don't have pens or lights in the mix. But I have watches lately! And footwear.

And really, even with the "Brand Loyalty Limiter" things can get easily out of hand.

I love my CRKs but like a lot of other brands. But most of them are very different. My collection is mostly CRK folders, traditional slip joints, and fixed blades from other makers.

A while back I owned all 4 CRK large folders. Ine by one I sold them to try other knives. It was fun but fit, finish and quality (= enjoyment) was lacking. Sold a few and just bought a large micarta Inkosi again. Already planning what to sell next to get a 21.
