Love my RMD Prototype, but...

...I'm honestly not too thrilled with the paper micarta scales. Aesthetically, they are stunning for sure. But they just feel so...slippery!

I bought the knife for backpacking/camping as an alternative to my Fallkniven A1 (still love that knife) but I have to say the grips on the RMD do not give me much confidence. Its true I haven't yet actually used it in the field and my opinion may change after, but I just don't see it coming anywhere near the A1 as far as grippynes.

Just wondering if its possible that Swamp Rat could change out the paper scales for their canvas micarta if I send it in? Or, what could I do to improve the grip on these things? I've heard of some people spraying their handles with truck bed liner but I'm not sure how that would turn out. Your thoughts? I absolutely love everything else about this knife and I intend it to be a user but really want some more grip. Thanks for any help. I'll leave ya with some eye candy...

If you want to swap the scales to canvas micarta (more grip than G10 scales) you're best off contacting the customer service at the Swamp.

Paper micarta will 'open up' when used and washed. It will not become supper grippy but 'pores' in micarta will form and improve grip.

Great looking knife. I agree that bp scales are slick. You could use pine tar or something to wrap them(sports tape) with to make them grippier. If the shop is going to work on them I would see if there is any surplus res-c to handle your knife.

Yep, get in touch with the Swamp customer service and see if they can swap them out for you.

You may also look at a Rodent 6 without the top guard. A RMD on steroids kind of. And plenty of choices in scales there.

Jonny, I will look and see if I have any canvas handles for the proto. Db had a great suggestion with the R6.

And while you looking at R6 you should not walk past R3, R4 and R9. Have you ever had RS? You should look it up to. Oh wait, there are Ruckis and hawks you could get too... ;)

Get some bike tire innertube and slip it over the grip. Should help out.

Awesome, thank you!!

In the meantime, I just finished wrapping the handle with some MossyOak camotape that I use on my hunting scopes. Grip has definetely improved, but obviously this is not a long-term fix.

You can buy a can of rubber dip that is usually used on tool handles at Home depot....it even comes in colors.

You can't go wrong with this advice!!! All of the Rodent series to include the Hawks, RUCKI's, RS & and any RMD:D Oops, maybe I just should say any SWAMP RAT. # for # I think they are the best going across the industry.

Now regarding your grip issue, I have sent both Busse Combats and Swamp Rats in for a regripping/recoating. Small $$$ and you get what you want, piece of cake. I agree about Paper Micarta, good to look at and some like it to use it, but I prefer G-10 or Micarta for my users.

Good luck on your choice.
