Not my quote, but I am also in the unassisted crowd. The control while opening is just one reason. There are several for me:
(1) Control while opening and closing. Ever had your thumb slip off the blade while closing and had it fly back open in your hand? I have, it sucks. Being able to open in a controlled manner without a loud *THWACK* is also preferable in many situations.
(2) Easier to open and close. No overcoming the initial detent of the torsion bar while opening, no resistance from the torsion bar while closing. This makes the thumbstuds a viable opening method as well, I did not like using them with the knife assisted.
(3) Legality. While assisted opening is not technically an "auto" it is not something I want to have to argue in court.
(4) One less part to break. I don't generally carry a torx set around with me, so if the torsion bar breaks in the field, the whole knife is useless.
(5) Perceived Quality. Granted, this will vary from person to person, but the feel of a glassy smooth manual opener conveys a sense of quality you just can't appreciate with an assisted knife.
To each their own, but the benefits of unassisted certainly outweigh the fraction of a second difference (if there is one) between assisted and manual opening in my eyes.
