I carried a 303 for a bit but after a while scaled down to a 305. Recently I saw a GEC knife, called Radio, that has one blade and a bottle opener blade. Sort of like those older knives that you would give a kid, back when you could give a kid a knife. Then I started thinking how great it would be to have a Buck 300 series with a bottle opener. Sort of like the Buck Clipper but with the opener blade, something small and handy.

Is there anyway to suggest something like this to Buck? It'd be way nicer than the Metro imho. Anyone else think so?

I guess if you drink lots of beer, this would be a good thing. There are many ways to get a cap off in a pinch; it's not necessary to have a dedicated cap lifter.

Begin a quest for the old SwissBuck - yes, you can have your cake and eat it too! OH

Stick,
In all honesty, about all you can do is mention it once-in-a-while here on the forum when the conversation favors such a comment or write a suggestion letter to Buck. I have pushed, using personal contact at knife shows, etc., for a two blade 303 an 301 with a regular clip blade and full length sheepsfoot or warcliff blade, for several years. I even had a couple of custom versions made up and sent them in to the high ups at Buck and no luck or even comment. So all I can say to you, Best of Luck with your ideas. I do think for a bottle opener to fit comfortably in the hand when closed and not in use you would have to have a large body knife, maybe a 301 or bigger. Take a bottle opener bladed knife and trace the blade on a piece of paper, cut it out, and see how it looks slipped down in the blade well of a 303 or other knife. I think designers would tell you the can and bottle opener blades have seen their era pass. You might get somewhere if you were wanting a blade to work on a I-phone or x-box.

I even pestered the BCCI board enough to offer a special order 300 knife, and the board finally gave it a go when Buck came up with enough metal to make 200 BG-42 bladed 301s, and we couldn't even get the 2500+ members to buy 200 of those. Not a very good 300 series impression for Buck to view. I believe I will give up and just let the 300s be what they are, knives for the pocket. Something to cut straps and string, sacks and plastic wrap. If you want a fancy one you will just have to customize it yourself.

I think there may still be a few brands of beer that do not have twist off tops in this day and age, but a bottle opener today is about as passé as a typewriter.

Buck issued a 110 in a tin for sale at Walmart many years ago. Inside the tin next to the knife was a bottle opener that went on your key chain. You may get a better response if you ask for a bottle opener to be issued with a knife again!

Yes. I think so.

While we are waiting I think it best to keep hydrated:

I have a cool black Metro around here someplace and an Extract with an opener as well. BTW, the picture 110 carries the Idaho (2005) tang stamp!

Here is the last RED 730 X-Tract from the Buck Factory Store bot in person last Summer. Note that the cap lifter locks!

BTW I use a cap lifter several times a week. I must have at least a dozen different ones from all over the world. One of my favorites is the Chinese Opera Mask openers.

twist offs sunk the whole bottle opener concept on a knife...the only ones I see using bottle openers in the past were bartenders, and that was single device. Though its funny I happened to come upon a site where they auction off lots of T.S.A. CONFISCATED KNIVES & MUTLI TOOLS but the number one item in thousands is a bottle opener combo with cork screw. LOL......

I had a victorinox classic sized knife called the manager years ago that I have since gifted to my girlfriend that had a bottle opener. It was handy and very effective. As I think about it now what would really be nice is a scout type of knife in the 300 series. Most people would say just buy a Swiss army knife but I've had plenty and as nice as they are I would love to buy American.

My recommendation would be to pick up a Leatherman Micra and slip it into your off pocket.

An old timer I used to work with advised me to move my Micra off of my key chain and into my pocket as it would allow me to use it without looking for me keys and without keys flopping around.

What I've found is that by off loading all my tool needs to the Micra, I can pick my EDC knife with no compromise. Or, I can follow my whims. Buck makes a lot of nice knives and while you may like a 300 series today, tomorrow you might be smitten by the 500 series. No problem. The Micra has the tool issue covered.

I no longer EDC a Buck (prefer flat convex blades) but this will give you the idea.
RFP: EDC knife and spare change.
LFP: Micra and money clip.

The cap lifters aren't as popular as they were, but a single blade clip or spear point & cap lifter/screwdriver is still a useful combination in a pocket knife. That GEC is based on their #15 frame and I have seen a few variations: the Boy's Radio, Crown Lifter, and the SFO Radio Jack. In my opinion, I'd look for a Radio Jack first, but the others are well made.

A Buck with a cap lifter/screw driver would be great. Sodas in glass bottles with caps are still available. :D

I have not had to wrestle down any stock to 'spey' in sometime, maybe carefully grind down spey blade into cap lifter. Go slow......but will void that blades warranty.

300

Personally, I think the cap lifter market is alive and well, and I use one quite regularly myself. Anyone who drinks a decent beer once in a while knows, 99% of microbrews (as well as a handful of macros) require cap lifters.
Not to mention many hispanic soda bottles and the classic coke/pepsi bottles.

I agree, plenty of beer require an opener. The best selling import in the U.S., Corona, requires a lifter. I find popping a top to be part of the ritual.

Respectfully, this is not a very good suggestion. There was a thread a while back where somebody tried just this very modification on a non Buck, but it was a total failure. Partly due to the blade being ground for cutting, and not a lot of room to work with on most spey blades. Luckily for that fellow, the manufacturer did replace his mangled blade for a reasonable charge.

I can understand that. Always looking for some use for the spey blade, as I have nothing to neuter or do I whittle. Would like to see a Buck folder with clip and long sheepsfoot only. A two blade. A warcliff would be even better. You could get a knife crafter to build you a bottle opener blade and insert in place of the spey, sorta like I did below. A little bird told me the 300 single blades may soon hit the road to nowhere.....I will again show my two blade modification in case someone important is looking........300

If I could snap my fingers and do it, I would make the sheepsfoot longer.

Nice and slim

Those look really nice 300!
Here is a poor old 701 who's main blade backspring gave out, and she came to me with a broken tip on the main...

single spring construction now, very slim in pocket, pointy wharncliffe and robust sheepsfoot to accompany it. Many bad words were uttered trying to put Humpty back together again ;) Even the pins( except for the scale pins ) were scavenged from the original carcass :)
