Here's a new knife I'm working on. I really like the loveless chute knife, so I decided to make one. This is really the prototype, I really want to buy a piece of Devin Thomas' stainless damascus and make one out of that. I made this out of 3/16" 1095, tapered the tang (first time I've ever done a tapered tang), and put some filework on it. I did change the handle some from the straight style on the loveless knife.
Now I'm just waiting on my stamp to get here from Infinity Stamps, then I can heat treat and get to finishing it. I'm going to try to get a good hamon on it with satanite.

I'm trying to decide what to use for the handle. I have micarta, and three pieces of stabilized maple burl, with one dyed green. I also bought a block of stabilized curly koa off here, but that will probably be going on the damascus one when I make it.
So, what do you guys think? I'm also considering drilling two 1/4" holes in the guard, I've seen a couple of the loveless knives done like that so it can be tied to a branch for making a spear, but I'm not sure on that one yet

I probably won't be able to sell it, but I can't seem to sell a knife on here to save my life

Thanks guys!
Luke

Luke, that's lookin great. The Loveless Chute knife is one of my favorites, I was gonna do one for the KITH but I decided to go with something differant.

I like the chute design as well, and yours looks nice. Good job on the tapered tang!

Just my preference, but I prefer no file work.

Lastly, O1 probably isn't goint to give you what you want in a hamon - just a line of demarcation between hard/soft. You need a shallow hardening steel for a hamon, and O1 is a deep hardening steel.

Best.
Steve

Thanks for catching my nuttiness Count. Luke, you should get what you're looking for if you play your cards right.

Going to adjust my peepers (or brain) now.

Best,
Steve

Yeah, I've gotten a few nice hamons before, but I think I'm going to try Nick Wheeler's vinegar method to bring it out this time. We'll see how it works

stupid question from a newbie, I have seen several different types of knives called "loveless style" and was wondering what makes it loveless style? I know it is off topic but it has been bugging me for a while.

I was just watching Bob Loveless' video lastnight.. and went online looking and found some of his rarer knives at price points between 10-30 thousand dollars.. wow. They're great knives, and certainly collectibles now.. but wouldn't it be nice to sell a knife at prices like that in your prime? lol. That knife is looking great, by the way!

dms, from what I understand, "loveless style" knives are designs he either came up with himself or popularized.

I can't imagine selling a knife at 10-30k, heck, the most expensive I've made are a couple bowies at $350

I can't believe I am going to type this but you gotta hold one to understand ( I was told the same thing and I despised the people who said it). There are definite cues that add up to the Loveless design; hollow grinds, handle contouring, handle shape, specific materials, even the sheath. After some study you can flip through old or new publications and instantly pick a real Loveless or Loveless pattern from the rest.

Just my $.02

thanks, I have been searching the internet for some time now and there are so many styles called "loveless" that I probably would not know one if I had it in my hand.
