I have wanted a big bear fighter since I was little, but can't afford 11,000-20,000 dollars fore an original I just ordered a Charles vestal big bear . So my question is does he make a good version of this knife? Or should be looking somewhere else? It seems very nice from the pics I have seen on his website but has anyone handled one of his knives? Or have any experience with his work? I'm just asking because it is very expensive, and it will be a user so its going to have linen micarta handles and a satin finished blade/sub hilt gaurd. So it's not going to be fancy or anything just functional. thanks in advance.

I had to google this knife as I could not believe a knife would be upwards of $20,000. It seems like a nice knife but for that much? Does he not make knives anymore?

Yes he does and he I'd a very judgmental person. Like he wont sell to some collectors,he wont sell a "fighting knife" to anyone he doesn't deem in need of one. And says the new generation of young people are to violent to have knives. I don't respect his view but do have tremendous for him as a maker.

Quick Kill what is your budget? What are you willing to spend on a loveless style knife? There are many makers who make very nice loveless style knives. There are many threads on this in the custom knives section and you will get more responses if this is posted or moved there.

I collect Loveless style knives from other makers, mainly because I like the designs. I think the standard Loveless drop point hunter is one of the best "all around" designs ever. I have about a dozen of that design alone.

I have 3 knives on order with C Vestal. I hope they'll be ready when I get home from Iraq next year. I think he does very nice work.

There are a lot of folks who do "Loveless" pattern work, and as previously noted it gets a lot of attention on the "Custom" part of this BBS.

You should look up the thread on the "Big Bear" Marcus Lin (flatgrinder on this BBS) recently finished.

Last: the matched set of hunters in my avatar are from another board member, Tim Hartman, who makes pretty good stuff too.

Every time I see the words "Loveless Big Bear" I want to kick myself in the backside for passing on one for $750 dollars back in the 70's. :grumpy::mad:

I want to try and stay under 1,000. I've tried to research maker's but haven't come up with much. But I will look for some older threads and see what I can find thanks.

Thanks for the response. you sounds like a devoted lovless design collector,I love all of his design and want to collect them, but until I start making more money this is going to be my Grail knife. Is the person that made your three on this forum affordable? I will check out that thread. Again thanks and stay safe.

Damn that sucks. I wish I could get one from any maker at that price let alone from lovless himself. Don't feel to bad tho most of us have past up a once in a lifetime deal.

Damn. It's been a long time since I last saw him, but I'll always remember his taking the time to show me around the shop. He could be crusty, but he was truely enthusiastic about the things he cared about. RIP.
