Since there are already a couple of Loveless style threads happening at the moment, this might as well be thrown in to the mix, a piece that was just traded for this week - a pretty cool-lookin' Hideout. I wouldn't have done this thread if it weren't for the really cool handle material, which really needs to be seen both in and out doors.

This one happens to have once been part of a matching set of the 20 different models (recently broken up) from the Luigi Peppini collection, with the shop number "1", burgundy micarta handle, nicely pictured in the book "RW Loveless" (by Luigi Peppini) on page 121:

Thats a real beauty of a Hideout! As you say handle material somewhat unique and very nice. A great addition to any collection.

There's something about the micartas on certain Loveless models that just look more "right" than other materials, IMHO. I really hadn't thought about doing this thread until I remembered David Sharp's thread that has the green micarta chute in it (kudos to David). I always loved that look on Loveless stuff, and this burgundy with red really, really takes the micarta/Loveless look a big step up, at least in my opinion.

I'm sorry if your name isn't Mr. Betzner, but will you adopt me?

A beautiful acquisition! One of my first Loveless pattern fighters was in the Burgundy Linen Micarta with the red liners; quite a rich look. My collection of Loveless pattern knives are all Micarta handled; IMHO it seems timeless.

That knife is sublime! Amazing example of how 'less is more'. Perfection does not need to shout about it.

Great idea the in and outdoors images.
Fantastic Loveless Hideout.
Congrats on a stunning knife, Bob !

Doug, indoors it's a very deep, dark, rich burgundy, almost a black burgundy, deeply polished. But put it in great lighting, and it's the color of a nice merlot. I didn't see any other way to really show the handle material well unless I used the great outdoors! Bob

It only just dawned on me to mention something that's not that apparent - the unusual shop number, along with the signature logo, on both sides..

I had noticed the stamp on both sides and the different look than the more popular stamps.

I DIDN'T notice the reference to its age in the title, but it does have a look as if it has some age to it. Sort of a "pocket worn" look. It must be a real pleasure to hold!

I've always had a fondness for the Loveless NYS but while it has a great look about it, the feel in the hand is all wrong, too smallish. The Hideout really fits the hand like a glove. I never have decided which is my favorite, the chute or the hideout model. Both vie for the favorite spot with me.

As to the age, that "pocket worn" look you mention comes from the original hard, deep polish finish given to the micarta on this particular handle, which also accounts for it's darkness, I think. You can barely see the micarta's pattern without good lighting, quite tight. But in the hand, it looks like it just came out of the shop.

I always loved how Bob Lum finished his maroon micarta and this Loveless looks the same. Bob (Lum) explained his technique to me at the SHOT Show one year. I'd like to use more of it myself!

Here's a close-up of the handle in the sun, if it helps:

That's beautiful!! ^^ If I make some glue and pin construction fixed blades this year, Maroon Micarta dust will be in the air :)
