Does anyone know the wattage of the soldering iron that Bob Loveless uses ? I'm talking about the one he shows in his Loveless Legend Vid. It has a slot milled in it for the blade to slide into, with the guard resting on top. And what are your thoughts on it ? Would it make soldering guards any easier or more convenient ? And if a guy wanted to get one made like it, where would he go ? I have tried the google with no results. Being electrically challenged, (I wired my shop, but with book in hand), how would a guy go about making something like that ?

David,

Check this thread for more info on how to make one. Doesn't look hard at all. I've got a 50 or so watt iron lined up for this, but haven't made it yet.

Thanks deker :) , that's a good read from RHRocker (thanks Robert). RH says his is 200 watt and produces sufficient heat, seemed to me the Loveless iron was hotter. Pretty similar concept, that's what I'm looking to buy or make though. Thanks again deker

The 200 is plenty. Tom Buchanan made me one with that wattage and made atubing which holds the handle. You just tighten it in place in your vice and you are in business.. First one took over 8 minutes from complete cold but the other 5 I did took about 2 minutes to heat. One nice thing is that you do not overheat like a torch or burner and it comes out very neat. In that day I did 4 with bolsters and 2 with hidden tan guards. Worked like achamp. Tom got him another but this one is GREAT. THANKS AGAIN TOM

Mr. Wessner, argel55, I too would like such a soldering iron. When I took
high-school shop in the 1950s those were the standard soldering irons used
in class and by workmen of all trades. I have searched in vain for that old
sturdy style but they seem to have been replaced by the flimsy lightweight
style used for circuit boards. If you find a source please post.

Tom picked this and another off of ebay. Some go higher but most ended up around $20.00 so not bad a deal. Just make sure of the wattage when you bid. Mike
