Not posted here for a while, having not made much for the last couple of years, but I've got a new grinder and I've decided to make a few bits and pieces.

First one was going to be a Loveless Field & Stream, but being seriously rusty to knifemaking, I cut the guard slot in the wrong place! Not to worry though, a quick profile change and all was well again...just a shame it isn't a Field & Stream anymore.

Second problem was the piece of brass I used turned out to be full of casting flaws. I didn't notice until I worked down to about 600 grit, and decided rather than bin it, I'd mark it 'R' for reject and give it away.

3/8" 0-1 blade with 5" hollow grind, black Micarta, red fibre liners and ugly flawed brass guard.

Second one is a Boot Knife, except it's not actually a Boot Knife in the Loveless pattern sense, it's an extended New York Special blade with a Boot Knife handle. Also, the grind is equal rather than smaller at the top making the grind straight, rather than having the 'S' shaped curve near the tip.

4 7/16" 0-1 blade hollow ground on 2" contact wheel (that was fun!) 9" overall, green canvas Micarta handle, with red fibre liners and 304 fittings and name plate.

Thanks for looking.

Really nice. I wish mine looked that good years ago. I wonder why so many makers today do not taper the handle tang. Do you find that the taper makes for a better feel and balance when using the knife?

Dawkind Dawkind OD and red liners pal...😉

Great job on those blades!!!!! I'd carry that first one, no problem..... Great lines on it.....And #2 fuhgedabowdit. Just awesome and luv OD green canvas!!!!!! Nice work...

IRBAILY,

I remember your knives back in the day, and I see that your current knives have lost non of their former splendour. I used to gaze at them and hope that someday I would be able to make a knife that good, I still do!. Your work is inspirational, welcome back.

Thank you all for your comments. It's very much appreciated.

I'm working on a Chute Knife and a medieval style dagger at the moment (I like to mix things up a bit!) so I may well be posting a bit more in the near future.

Cheers,

Ian.

Tapered tangs certainly lighten things up. These two balance pretty much on the front pin. As much as anything I think a tapered tang looks good.

Those look great! For the brass, you could always texture it.

Funnily enough, I did think about texturing it. I even practiced on a piece of scrap brass. The problem was where to start and stop the texturing. If I had the ability to engrave a line for a border, I'd have done that and textured inside it, if that makes sense.

I've used a lot of brass over the years, but this is the first time I've ever had this problem. Just one of those things I guess.
