(First, lashings of apologies if this has been asked before ad nauseam.) I have this beautiful Halcon knife but the blade as you can see is severely scratched:

The edge itself is not damaged. A friend of mine suggested using increasingly fine grains of sandpaper. Before I start sandpapering my knife I figured I'd inquire if: A] This is a good idea, and B] If anyone might be able to offer more specific info, or perhaps a different technique if a better one exists. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't see any problem with it myself. ;)

The blade appears to be hollow ground, which will make using a sanding block a bit tricky. I would suggest starting with some 120 grit sandpaper wrapped around a bit of 1/2" or 3/4" PVC pipe. Sand away from the spine and toward the edge, going across the blade the same way the original grind lines run. Depending on how deep the scratches are, you may have to remove quite a bit of steel to get them out completely. If the scratch pattern from the 120 grit sandpaper doesn't match the original grind lines, you can go with larger or smaller grit to match. Or you can simply keep going with successively finer grits until you have it mirror polished.

My knives get so scratched up from use that I don't bother with finishing as a rule.

Thanks yablanowitz, that's really helpful.

Can't help but that is one gorgeous handle. What is it made of?
Wish I could say but it was a gift so I'm not sure. It's semi-transparent and probably one or more forms of plastic -- looks nice with the brass component of the knife, which is from Spain. Hopefully I can get it looking halfway decent again..

I have done as yablanowitz suggests, only I use a wine cork as a sanding block. You have to be careful though, because the flat of the blade can get scratched from the sanding and you will then have to sand that as well.

Accepting Bill's suggestion would be much simpler.
