Loving My Caly 3.5... but.. (lanyard or no lanyard?)

My Caly 3.5 came in the mail on Saturday and I was beyond excited.

The factory edge on her is insane; the invoice that came with the packaging is currently in a million tiny, sharp pieces.

(didn't have my DSLR on me, so I had to manage with the point-and-shoot and some color correction!!)

The deep carry clip is amazing (my first of the sort). It just disappears while in a jeans pocket or even when I wear it inside the waistband.

But, I'm really unsure if I should put on a 550 lanyard on this guy! I'm fairly certain I can physically get one through the provided lanyard hole with some fishing line, but does attaching a lanyard defeat the purpose of the wire clip?

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to say, this baby melts in your hands, it's scary cool. Had a really enjoyable time cutting up an apple earlier.

(Here's a photo of my other Spydies with lanyards on; love these two guys)

Lanyards or fobs are really a personal preference thing. If it works for you, by all means make one for your new toy. I do find fobs the most annoying things on knives when I use them though.

I think lanyards are fine if you want to carry a knife loose in your pocket. If you are going to use the clip, then I am not sure why it would be necessary. I love the deep carry wireclip and choose to use it when I carry my Caly's.

Glad to see you like the knife. It fits my hand and needs perfectly. I am a bit of a Caly fan. :p

Yes à lanyard will defeat the purpose of the deep carry clip obviously, but if hiding your knife is not important to you, a very short lanyard will help grabbing it ... Not a bad thing either.

If you use your lanyards for additional grip or to aid in retrieving your knife from your pocket, I don't see that as defeating the clip in and of itself. If you specifically want the knife concealed (and how could it ever be, with that pocket clip showing all the time??), then yes, I suppose that might attract a bit more attention. It also might make your knife more prone to being snagged or caught on things, but obviously that's not a problem if your other two Spydies have lanyards. So...

Go with your heart.

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll make another lanyard to be ready if I want to go on and attach one on my Caly.

And yeah, I kind of like lanyards hahah. I have them on my [above] Spydies, Cadet, and flashlight. I'm obsessed with box stitch lanyards at the moment.

I was worried that the Caly would be hard to pull out of my pocket because of the wire clip; I'm used to pulling on the lanyard as well as the tiny bit of the handle that sticks out of the pocket normally when removing the tool from my pocket. I was surprised that removing my new buy from the pocket is quite easy.

The Caly 3.5 is a fine piece of knife. Though I have not studied the data, I bet that it has one of the highest blade to scale length ratios of any Spydie. In other words, it pack a lot of blade into a smallish knife. Thats a good thing. Very ergonomic. And has an aesthetic appeal that is hard to quantify.

I don't do lanyards, but thats just a personal thing.

It does. The Caly 3.5 has a 0.72 Edge:Closed ratio. Here is my spreadsheet comparing various spydies:

Column J gives the Edge:Closed Ratios. I don't have every Spydie ever made, but of the ones listed, the only ones better than the Caly 3.5 are the Memory (0.73), Atlantic Salt/Rock Lobster (0.74), Junior (0.75), Tenacious (0.76), and LionSpy (0.77). In the same class as the Caly are the Rookie, Stretch, Police, and Zulu.

Ah yes, it's hard to not to fondle the knife during my free-time, it's like a jigsaw puzzle made out of a cloud.
This is my first quality lockback with an opening hole (well, I don't have one with a thumbstud either) though, so I'm getting used to flicking it open. The initial retention might take a few 100 or so openings more to acquaint myself with.

Oh wow, this spreadsheet is really informative. Cool!

Nice work!

I think I'm one of the only people who likes how some of the Spyderco knives have long handles with short blades. Don't get me wrong -- my 4" folders still rank amongst my absolute favorites, but I love that lopsided design, like on my PM2. It definitely lends a feel of additional control.

And, of course, the iconic, classic Military.

+1. Thanks for sharing that data. I hope you don't mind my saving a copy. I've added your Blade Forums handle to the copy of Excel File name I saved so I'll remember who created it if I ever reference the data on future threads.

No problem, it's been useful for comparisons. The handle thicknesses were contributed by other members on the Spyderco forums, attributed inside the spreadsheet.
