is it me or does it seem like the lower end benchmades are not quite up to par? i had one that had the lousiest lockup straight out of the box. has anyone else experienced this? seems like for that kind of money, spyderco does a much better job. Oppinions?

Benchmade quality control has fallen from its once high standards. In days gone by, I never got a bad BM but, now I don't really consider them - preferring Spyderco which makes a very good knife at a good pricepoint with excellant quality control.

I only have 3 benchmades so I'm not the best person to comment but there are numerous posts on Benchmade quality. The Search link on the header of the page should help you to find them.

Personally, if i buy a benchmade, I'm going to ask the dealer to do a lookover for me before he ships them. I'd suggest you do the same.

I've got 7 Benchmades, and haven't had a single problem with a one of them other than the best edge on them was still not as sharp as I wanted it. That's not a quality control problem, IMO, but more my problem, since about half of the Spydercos that I have bought (about 7 or 8 again) had edges less sharp than I like also.

Just another perspective.

OBTW, the lowest end Benchmade that I ever bought had the best edge that I have seen, other than Buck's Edge 2000™.

BM spends much money on advertising and hype. Perhaps increasing the quality control and customer service budget would be money well spent!

Yes. The only knife I have that fails the spine-whack test is a medium Ascent.. and it's a lockback!

If you're looking at lower end knives, I'd definitely check out another company.

I grudgingly retired my BM 830 (Ascent now- Eclipse when I got mine) a long while back.. Served me well as did the BM Panther before it (now discontinued) The Panther was a "Low End" knife, but it out-performed many others. I haven't felt compelled to own any BM's since the AFCK.
