I had this info on another forum, but it is broke at the moment. I got my new probe in last night for my thermocouple and was going to do some normalizing. I was wondering about the low-end austenization temps for W-2 and 1095. I plan on soaking for a bit, so as low as I can get would be best. :D

Michael, I've pretty much memorized that thread to get the results of my small bowie. As I recall Don, recommended 1400 degrees for approx 5 minutes.

Sounds like a good start - I'll do some thin pieces tonight and see about snapping some to see what kind of grain I get.

W-1 and W-2 can range greatly in carbon content. 1400F would be the low end hardening temperature but at that temperature ,especially if you know you have a higher carbon content ,try 10 minutes.

after reading some of these threads of late why do i have the feeling anyone that can soak for long times will start soaking longer and longer now:D
