Yeah, I know they are both made in China, but it's hard for me to resist a folder in the $25.00 to $30.00 range. So which would most likely be the better of the two in terms of lock up, blade steel, ergonomics, and fit and finish?

Benchmade Pika II plain edge

or Byrd Cara Cara G-10 plain edge

Or should I look at something else all together?
I am trying to keep the price below $30.00, and I need tip up carry. I would also prefer the blade be at least three inches in length.

Just spend a touch extra and buy a Benchmade mini Griptillian off of ebay.

Between those two knives, the Byrd Cara Cara G10 wins hands down. I have both, and the Byrd is a vastly superior knife. For the price, you will not find a better knife anywhere.

I have a Mo'skeeter from CRK&T. $20. I really like that l'il biter.
Lycosa

If you're concerned about buying USA, how about a good 'ole Buck 110? $30 or less at Wal-Mart, and one heck of a knife.

Looks like the Cara Cara is a better knife than the Pika II. Thanks for the feedback.

Fantastic knife and my local Gander Mountain has them for $19.99.

Y'all just don't understand. If a folding knife isn't black, doesn't have a pocket clip, and doesn't have a hole or a thumb stud in the blade so you can whip it out instantly with one hand it just isn't worth a crap for anything. How old fashioned!

My Buck 110 is SOOOO offended!

 You have offended the old-fashioned wheezin' geezer folding knife Gods. You will now be summarily drawn and quartered with a cheap, imported, plastic-handled tactical toy that has "PREMIUM" etched on the pot metal blade. And it'll be "out-of-the-box" dull, too.

thx - cpr

Wouldn't it be freakin' awesome if Buck made a 110 with a thumb stud, a four- position pocket clip, titanium bolsters, and G-10 handle inlays instead of wood? That thing would sale like whiskey in prison.

Nice lock up, works well, I've had no problems with it.

The blades being equal, the Cara Cara has far nicer G10, much better handle shape and grip able material.

Ya' know, I've always wondered that too melt. I know you don't mess with perfection, but the 110 being superb in it's own right...isn't perfect, why not make it perfect. Keep the old 110 for those who love it, and make another with all the technology.

I vote for the Cara Cara as I have one of the Benchmades and don't much like it in particular. I dooo like Benchmade knives however, just don't like that particular one. It was a gift from a buddy, so I keep it in that sentiment!

Lovin' the Byrd:D:D

Mine is easy to keep sharp, holds a good edge and is cheap enough if I loose it it's not a problem.

(Actually I have the Meadowlark G10 and have a Meadowlark FRN coming today to shave a little weight)

I had that BM model and wasn't very thrilled with it...it felt cheap and just wasn't a very good knife. I would go for the Byrd if that is what you are deciding on.

:thumbdn: personally, I think that no one should buy any knife that is made in China :barf: ...no matter how nice they think it might be... thats just my opinion, though. :)

I had an old Schrade LB7 that I put a pocket clip on back in the late 1990's. Worked ok, but weighed a ton. Only carried it for a day or two, then took the clip off and put it back in the sheath.

I queried Buck on a similar idea last year - why not make one like this out of the custom shop? Maybe a little thinner in the grip, With various colors of Micarta, bolster types, clip designs, thumb studs, etc. I didn't think to ask about titanium bolsters. Got the typical "Thank you for the suggestion, sir. We'll look into it" response. Oh, well.

Your idea of titanium bolsters really has merit, IMO. Maybe we can get on the Buck forums (since we're off topic here anyway) and see if anyone from Buck might consider it . . .

I think both knives are great , I'm not the biggest Benhmade fan ( I do respect the company though :) ) but I love my mini Pika, I consider it a fantastic value.
I also love my Cara Cara.

So , but both ! :D

Thumbstud?
Maybe.

Pocket-clip?
No thanks.:thumbdn:
The last thing the 110 needs is a pocket-clip to ruin the perfect handle comfort.

Titanium bolsters?
Yeah, why not.

G-10 instead of wood?
NEVER!!!:thumbdn:
