Low serial number - to use or not to use?

I know not many production pieces become collectible, or they don't become collectible enough to warrant locking up the knife and never using it, but this may be an exception.

I just got a Surfire/Ryan production Alpha, serial number 007. Not only is the serial number low, but Steve Ryan posted on another site that current production Alphas will have red/black scales instead of green/black on mine. So my knife will be visually different from a second (or higher) generation knife, as well as having the low number.

Should I just use it and not worry about it, or should I lock it away and carry one of my other EDCs?

Well, if you bought it to use and don't see yourself selling it, then I say use it!

Or, if you have something else that will do the same tasks and has no upside potential, use the other tool. When I consider the silly amounts I have spent on knives, I have to recall that, somehow, our ancestors conquered a continent with carbon steel and wood handles --not a liner lock or a slab of micarta in sight.

You are not going to get rich off the money you make from this knife as an investment. It may well go up in value one day, but if you bought it to use you may as well go ahead and do so.

Then again, if you have lots of knives and don't need this one for your rotation, then you could make it a safe queen and see what happens.

don't you love when someone straddles the fence like that?

DUDE! 007 That's gotta be worth somethin' to someone...:D
I'm not really a collector, but I do seem to have more knives than I can use. When Ren had a BM 942, it was pre-pro 666 of 1000, and definitely added more appeal when I bought it, and when I traded it(doh) to my buddy, that was one of the reasons he wanted it bad enough to convince me to trade it to him. I say use though if you feel like it though

In which case, 999 (the number of the inverted and backwards Beast) would also have collector value, no?
