I have a couple of Schrade blanks that a good friend gave me and I'm in the process of planning to have them finished out. These are profiled blanks and I don't know if..... a. they have already been heat treated, b. if they ever would have been heat treated. These are fixed blade blanks, by the way. Which brings up the bigger question which concern all Schrade knives both fixed and folder. Are they all heat treated or none of them heat treated or some and not others. I haven't noticed anything in advertising or the forum that addresses this. Thanks.

If the blanks are ground, most likely they have been heat treated. R-58 or 59 is probably about right. I think (don't know for sure) that the blanks were heat treated right out of the blanking machines, before the primary and secondary grind operations. Definately before the buffing and edge grind.

That help? Perhaps LT can tell us for sure?

Most blades are heat treated after they have been ground. Usually the only thing you do after heat treating is the final edge grind and polishing.

Frankly I believe what you have could be in either condition and I sure do not know the difference. If you find out let us know. I know just who to ask but do not know when I will see him I will try to remember to see if I can get you a better answer Sorry LT.

I believe that is almost always correct. If you don't want to chance it, you may have some custom knife makers near you who do their own heat treating and hardness testing. Almost all Universities do hardness testing, you might want to give one a call.

This is what blades look like after they have been heat treated and before they have been cleaned up and polished:

One of my blanks is a 134OT and it has been hollow ground to a near final finish, just not polished, but it does not have the "mottled" finish like those posted above. The other is a filet knife and it shows no sign of grinding or the mottled look, nor has it been really polished. It is what I would call a flat grind, but there are no grinder marks of any kind. The 134OT shows the grinder work very plainly. Thanks to all for your in put.

The file test will work on your blanks.

A quick swipe or two will tell you if it's been heat treated or not.

If you're unsure of the difference, try a pass on something that you know has not been heat treated and then on your blanks - if they've been heat treated you'll know immediately.
