I won a knife on ebay the other day made by the Ludwig Groten company out of Solingen, Germany. Seller said that this company was in buisness from 1947 to 1980. Its a trapper pattern, except one of the blades is a sawblade and what appear to be nice bone scales. I was wondering if anyone could give me some background on this company and does anyone have one of their knives ? I will give some more info when the knife gets into my hands, still in the mail right now. Thanks.

OTguy,
I have the same knife. The Parker's were hawking these for around $30-$40 for a while. Claimed they were "New, Old Stock." Came with a "Certificate." Claimed they were produced in the old David Everts' factory. They might or might not be the real deal, agewise. I bought one for $35 'cause I liked the look of the pattern. I wouldn't get overly excited about the value, but it is a nice user.

Looks like a Bulldog to me, also like a new/old Shapleigh cattle knife I bought a while back from some of the Parker people. If thats the case, then it should be a nice knife. Besides, I use them all anyway. I have a selection, not a collection. I'll update when I get it in my hands.

OTguy,
I just looked up the certificate.....The David Everts Company made knives beginning in 1802, I believe. Groten bought the firm in 1947, but didn't change the name until 1960. He owned it until 1980. The business MIGHT still be actve and make cutlery in Solingen, because Levine's Guide showed it as active up till 1997. Or maybe the Parker's bought the trademark. Not positive, just trying to add information.
I believe your knife will have Groten on the main spear blade....and DSE (I think it's David S. Everts) with crossed flags, on the saw. Saw is marked Rostfrei....so I think both blades are stainless.

Just a little more info. Enjoy the knife.

OTguy,
Here is a link to SMKW for the Groten....

As you can see, they were selling it for $29.99 ( I've already lost $5 on my purchase.. )....now you can also see that it is "Temporarily out of stock." Really now, how does one find any more stock of a knife made between 1960-1980? Maybe it won't ever come back in "Stock" again. One should hope not, eh? Or maybe they'll find a few more "New/Old Stock?"
Whatever.....

By the way, I'm NOT trying to be a killjoy here, or disparage any sellers. As I said, I have the same knife. I'm just glad I bought it because I liked the pattern....not for the "Certificate."

That is the very same knife that arrived in the mail today. I'm almost certain that this knife was made by the same folks that make Bulldogs. The bonestag scales are a dead ringer for the ones on recent Bulldog models and the shield is exactly the same as the one on my BD stockman. Maybe they found some old blades and put them on new frames ? I doubt it, but who knows. Like you say, I bought the knife because I like the pattern and it is a nicely done knife. I really like the spearpoint main, looks good. I have sharpened and stropped it and it took a nice edge. We'll see how it holds up to some use after I carry it a bit.

I believe they have made some of bulldogs knives. When it comes to parker though, you have to relaize the man did allot of business with allot of companies over the years, all over the world. Japan, germany, etc.etc. etc. etc. some, to me were " alittle suspect", but who knows? He did some really good things for the knife collecting pupulace. Promoted it over the years, really worked with some companies to bring back old patters, etc.

Something also, to keep in mind. Many solingen makers have made knives for others, even each other, much like american companies. Example would be camillus making remington knives, etc. In fact, did you know that some of the original remington knives made in the, 30's, or 40's, I believe, were made by camillus for them!!

Well,I just realized how old this thread is,but I guess it's OK to bring it back up...
I found this one and thought it looked really nice.....Not sure of the age, anyone wanna guess?
Or even verify age?...I hope it's made in Germany, anyone know that?...
Thanks for input,JD
