My Lum Chinese arrived and I am very happy with it.

I have owned all brands of knives, including Sebenzas and William Henry knives.
A few handmade/customs also found their way to me.
I can honestly say that this particular knife is undoubtedly my all-time favourite.
I do not really like liner locking knives, but this one works very well.
Like AG Russell says on his website – this is one well-made knife.
It will become a classic.

Heh. I'll be messing with it when my friend gets one.

I agree, wholeheartedly, oupa!! The Lum is one of my favorite Spydies, and on its' way back to Spyderco, at this moment, for a little TLC.

Does it beat your Emerson. Why is it good I haven't seen one in the flesh.

The older Emersons are good knives.
I do not particulary like the never ones with the double detent.

The Spyderco Lum has a very practical blade shape.
The slightly drooping handle fits the hand very comfortably.
The fit and finish is of a very high standard.
I do not think it was intended to compete with any of the offerings from Ernie.

I can tell you however, that I did have a Spyderco JD Smith and found it as tough, more comfortable and better finished than any Emerson that I have had.

Another one enjoys the Chinese folder. :D
Slowly, but surely everyone will be as happy as you are. They just need to get their own Chinese folder. ;)

i have to say the lum is a better knife when compared to my 2000 emerson, the emerson cost about 50 bucks more and imo the lum is the better knife, but which one i LIKE more is a different story altogether i guess

Hi, I'm new to these boards but not to knives.
I recently got a Lum folder with the green scales
and am also very pleased. It is not offensive and
when closed looks deceptively small. It came razor
sharp and slices like a champ.

Almost perfect.

Needs surface texture. I took the clip off of mine. Now, it is a real slim jim.

However, without the clip, the very smooth surface is a bit of a liability. I am seriously considering have the surface customized with texture.

I note that Michael Janich (on the Spyderco website) put grip tape on his Lum Chinese (for MBC use). I hate to do that to a very beautiful knife, but maybe that is the best solution.

It's a nice, well-made knife. However, after checking out a friend's Chinese folder, I find it too slippery for heavy work. My Military has a far better grip and a better blade shape that will do anything the Lum will do and then some. And my hand will be a lot safer while doing those jobs.

I found that the scales of my (Massad) Ayoob folder were also alittle too slippery, so I put "Agrip" on the non-clip side, and that made a "world of difference", without being too "grippy" or too rough, like some grip-tape can be.

I love texturing knife handles (and blades) and have done quite a few.
Aluminium comes up really nice with a wood bark finish.
If I could, I would have posted a picture of a SAK Soldier that I did.
I strongly believe that, as soon as my Lum has one little chip of coating missing, it will be the perfect excuse to attack it with my Dremel and buffing wheel!

I have a green Lum, and I do like it a LOT. But, I've broken the clip off of mine TWICE now. Sent it in the first time because the grind on the swedge was crooked and had the clip replaced at the same time. This time I think I'll ask Spyderco to just sell me a couple extra Lum clips.

The problem is that the clip is pretty narrow and the twin screw holes right next to each other creates a point that has very little material. I'm wondering if I can get a beefier one? I've also wondered if a clip could be designed to work like a leaf spring, with two layers working together. Take it a step further, have the inside layer be a hinge, that will only open a couple of millimeters, this would protect the outer spring layer from being over extended and bent.

As luck would have it, I made the list for the Lum Chinese passaround evaluation. As luck would further have it, I'm last in line so I have the option to make an offer if I like the knife. It ain't often a fellow can test drive a knife for a few days before plunking down the cash. Keep an eye on the Lum passaround thread. Interesting opinions there.

As much as I like my Chinese folder as is, I'd like to see a small choil and grip serrations on the spine. Perhaps in a future version?

maybe spyderco can apply the same handle treatment to the chinese folder that they did to the new handled massad ayoob's.

the new massad ayoobs are bead blasted before the almite is applied, its similiar in appearance to the bead blasted anodized T6 aluminum handles on the benchmade 942, but not nearly as durable.

I've been seriously considering having some checkering machined into the handle of my blue Lum. Love the blade/handle configuration, but a more secure grip would be a huge plus. Perhaps a small "guard" at the base of the blade?
