Lum Chinese Appreciation

All I can say is damn! I recently snagged a Lum Chinese in ZDP-189 and it's easily my new favorite knife. Must be the simplicity and how perfect it fits in hand. The huge, razor sharp blade tucked away in a tiny handle doesn't hurt, either. I used to be smitten with my Sage 1, but the Lum has booted it from my pocket. All week, everything I've had to cut has melted away and the Chinese is still shaving sharp.

Any more runs of this knife planned?

Late this year there is supposed a large G10 handled version, and a carbon fibre version

The carbon fibre is different that the normal twill weave that you see.

The "big one" is bigger than the current flavor?

I think the Lum Chinese is the most organic, sweet looking design out there. The shape tends to make it want to squirt out of my hand, like a banana shooting out of a banana peel, but it is certainly a sweet looking knife.

I agree with you 100%. The CF and G10 may just rectify that problem. That's why I'm going to get the CF and G10 model. Just to find out. And yes, the big one is a good amount larger than the standard fare.

I like design a lot, I wish the knife would have choil and do not have swedge. Still one of my ten favorites.

The large version in G10 is supposed to have a four inch blade, I think.

I'm going to get one of Carbon Fibre versions to add to my green serrated version.

I agree, the big one may make an excellent camp folder, and I'm interested in seeing how the smaller G10 gets refined. I believe I read somewhere the big one has a 4.5" blade? Not overly excited about VG-10. Hopefully we'll see some runs with more exotic/hard use steel.

I disagree about the knife needing a choil or not having enough grip, though. At first I thought I'd miss the Sage's jimping and choil, especially when closing the knife. Maybe it's just me, but I choke way up on it, and the ergos feels even better. Thumb is anchored above the Spyderhole right before the swedge starts, index wraps around the large part of the handle just before the blade starts, and the knob/curve at the end keeps everything from sliding forward. Also, the lock is forward enough where the blade still can't get me when closing (very close though). Simple and effective as can be on all fronts.

I had a ZDP version before, it was a nice knife but I traded it for a D2 Military. I especially liked the blade shape. I'd probably buy another one but in VG-10.

The Chinese Lum is one of my favorite leaf blade knives. I bought the two originals and then the black ZDP-189. When the foliage greens came around with the black blades, I did some blade swapping to produce an all black Lum. I have one in my EDC rotation and the all black just looks awesome. The bottom Lum is a foliage green with the ZDP-189 blade.

I originally thought the lack of choil and jimping would make it an unusable knife but have come to appreciate the way it feels in my hand. The Lum Chinese is a very usable knife. If it had the wire clip I'd be even happier.

Looking forward to both new versions too, though my hand is just a bit too large for the handle for a really tight grip.

Never handled either, but it seemed to me that the large one was about 3.5 inches according to the photos posted... I'd totally go for a 4 incher though.

According to a reliable site that has them for preorder, the specs for the Large Lum/CF Lum are:

Overall Length: 8-9/16" (217 mm) 7-3/16" (183 mm)
Blade Length: 3-3/4" (95 mm) 3-5/32" (80 mm)
Cutting Edge Length: 3-7/16" (87 mm) 2-7/8" (73 mm)
Closed Length: 5-1/32" (128 mm) 4-1/4" (108 mm)
Steel: VG-10 VG-10
Handle Material: Black G-10 Nishigun Carbon Fiber
Weight: 4.3 oz. (123 g) 3.0 oz. (86 g)
Clip: Left/Right Right
Tip Carry: Up/Down Up/Down

Since the CF Lum is the same size as the previous ones, that means the Large Lum only has about 1/2" larger blade and 3/4" larger handle than the "normal sized" one.

If it had the wire clip I'd be even happier.

My only complaint with the knife. I contacted STR to see if he had a low rider clip template for a Lum, but no luck. I would hate to lose my knife in the mail, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'll have to handle the large Lum before I can decide how I feel about it. The changes in blade and handle length don't sound like much, but I'm sure it will be very noticeable. Hopefully Spyderco decides to treat us to some interesting steel :)

Spyharpy:

Do the bottom 2 Lums have titanium handles?

The bottom two are the foliage green models that come with VG-10 black and satin finish blades. The lighting in the photo makes them look like titanium. There were no titanium Chinese Lums produced.

The latest rumor:
Titanium Lum next month, this is a lot of Chinese Lums lately:six variants within last couple years.

Looks like it is an exclusive commissioned by the wholesale distributor Moteng. It will be available from dealers who do business with Moteng.

The scale material is simply listed as "titanium". MSRP is $199.95. ETA is 7/10.
