I was reading the Military Man Recruit thread when Sal jogged my memory about this baby. I saw the prototype at last years Blade Show and....I want one, maybe two. I looked at a custom version of it with the large thumb knick (sp?), but was already too tapped out to even think about dropping ~$500 on it. A flat ground, wide blade in a unique drop point profile. Comfy handle. I have no idea what a production version might look like, but I'm sure it will be good. I know there is already one Lum folder (tanto) in the line, and you are trying to reduce the number of SKU's, but oh gawd--OK I'm going to stop before I start begging and groveling (it's hard to type from the supine position!). Like I said, I want one (or two, or three).

Paul - The Bob Lum designed "Chinese Folder" is scheduled as a Y2K model with a RL. Is is a highly evolved design.

Sal you have a winner in the Lum design.
I'm twiddlin' my thumbs and licking my chops waiting for this one........what steel will you use......

I can't wait!!! Hopefully the world will make it to the year 2000. It would be a bummer if everything crashed and I never saw my Spyderco Lum Chinese folder.

Blades

I have been lusting after this knife ever since I heard there was a prototype at the Blade Show. IMHO it is just about the nicest looking design out there, non-tactical and with lovely flowing lines. A fellow forumite (thanks Ralf) e-mailed me a series of scans of the custom version with a Spydie hole and it looks stunning. My desktop wallpaper is now a scan showing the Chinese folder along side a Military and a Native (next purchase, thanks Sal and BF). My wife thinks I'm crazy and visitors to the house start making excuses and edging towards the door, but I do like seeing those knives every time I use the computer

The Lum has been in development for at least three years, as i have an article blurb about it in one of the first issues of Tactical Knives...On a side not, on www.ebay.com, somebody was auctioning a prototype...

You're always welcome Clay.

Here for everybody a scan of the handmade version in comparison to common Spyderco pieces.

The blade is very shiny, so my scanner had some problems with the reflection and made it look black like the stainless handle of the Native.

Ralf, Thanks for the pic. The comparison makes it that much better. It had been a year since I handled one of those babies (the Lum). I saved it into a favorites folder so I can go look at it whenever I want until the Spyderco version comes out. Could you e-mail me and let me know some specs and what kind of deal you got on it? Probably can't get one but I'm curious. Seems like I remember a price of about $500. But the one I priced was a little different. Hopefully it will be out before my wedding and i can give them to my groomsmen. I'm glad no one was home when I saw that picture because I sounded like Homer Simpson when he sees donuts---"uuuoogghhh--Chinese foooolldeerrr--uuuooogggghhhhh!"

I've been out of the Chinese folder loop and now that I see a visual of it, I'm very curious; is this a strict utilitarian piece or a 'multi-purpose'

model? Will the handles be G-10, micarta, metal? I'm a texture kind of guy, so you know where I'm heading.

Surely, with the decision to incorporate a RL it's meant to handle some harsh action.

If there were any previous threads that flashed some potential specs. I'd appreciate some direction.

Thanks,
Ken

Does anyone know if the production version is going to keep Bob Lum's Chinese name etched in the blade? The reason I ask is that his last name is written the same way as mine and it would be cool to have a knife with my name written right on the blade!

OVERWHELMED

Sal, I got a second job so I could pay for all the Spydies I want....

Ralf, thank you for that picture, it is being printed out.....

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW,

Spyderco- I love you....

Ohhhh,

And I hope it comes as it seems to be in the picture with a titanium handle.....

Titanium handles, yyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeessssssssss....

G-10 is cool and functional, but to tap the handle and say, "This is titanium...."

WOW.....

Blasted ti would be OK, but deifinitely ti.

I'd rather see Spyderco's high quality G10 than Ti handles. An index finger choil or extension of the front of the handle to preseve and protect one' finger would be nice.

If they incorporate the RL on their long line of top models they will do very well. Personally, I'm not buying another liner lock (I would take the Military but I can wait for the RL).

Yeah I'm crazy, but what do you want me to do about it

Ron,

I don't think Bob Lum would allow Spyderco to change the handle design and pesonally I hope they don't. The way the handle flows smoothly into the blade is the first thing that attracted me to this design and is part of what makes it so different from most other offerings out there. In any case Ralf assures me that the increase in width of the blade as it approaches the handle is enough to prevent your hand sliding forward. Not that it is a knife I would want to stab with

.

Ken, as I remember, Sal said they would keep the production versions around the same size as Bob Lum's originals. This would mean 5" closed with a 3 3/4" blade like Ralf's picture and 4 3/8" closed with a 3 1/8" blade. There is also the Mini-Chinese folder, 3 7/16" closed, 2 7/16" blade. Me, I just want them all

David, titanium yes, yes, yes.

Another factor to keep the knife quite safely in your grip is the handle shape. The downward bend part rests quite comfortable in your palm and won't slip too much. Of course when your hands are sweaty, I would not use the knife for thrusting movements.

From the feel I noticed that this knife leads you much more to make swinging, slashing movements rather than stabbing ones.

Nonetheless, without any guard or retention for your hand you definitely have to be more carefully with this knife than with others. Well, that's the price you pay for these beautifull flowing lines.

Didn't see this thread 'till now but if interested, I just posted a rambling review of the custom Lum, in the respective forum.
