Ok, so what is up with the secondary edge on my Lum Tanto? I think I've heard it referred to as an "appleseed" grind? Is it supposed to be ... um... rather non-sharp? Almost ... um.. ulp... dull?

Overall, love the knife. Heck, just the shape of it makes me keep pulling it out of the sheath just to look. By the way, I REALLY like the sheath. Not to the point that it overshadows how much I like the knife, though! ;)

Excellent job, Spyderco. And I'm starting to develop an affinity for AUS-8.... Go figure, with all the new super-steels on the market, I'd develop a fondness for an old one.

It's a hamaguri grind (appleseed grind) :p

I remember hearing about it in the 204 video.

Sal said that the hamaguri grind was used mostly on hatchets and stuff like that because any other grind would quickly wear away after hacking at a tree or something with a hatchet.

The hamaguri grind is for extra strength in the tip.

When you look at the grind it actually looks like an appleseed, hence the name "appleseed grind," due to it's roundness and not "flat" like other grinds.

That's all if I remember correctly...let's hope I'm correct :p

Here's a not so old post concerning the hamahuri (appleseed) grind on the folding Lum Tanto: http://bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179642

Tonyccw claims at the end that Spyderco does a bad job of Lum's grind. While I have no doubt that his custom work is on a higher level than the production ones, I find it doubtful that Spyderco's implementation is really that "bad." If this were the case, why would he continue to team up with the Spyderco team, and why would he make a second collaboration with the hamaguri grind?

So it's not particularly supposed to be sharp per se. OK, I can deal with that. The primary edge is sharp enough for both. :D

By the way, thanks for the thread reference, TOTC.
