Lynx jaw knife with fossil mammoth ivory sheath. Overall length 6 inches, blade is 2 ½ inches long x 1 inch wide. Steel is high carbon 1095, and has my hammered copper in the steel that looks like blood. . Custom wax cast guard also hold the blade to the jaw. Sheath is nice blue mammoth ivory pinned to Alaska burl birch wood. Light in weight, feels comfortable in the hand. Designed for display light work only , jaw would be too Fragile to use much force on. No loop on sheath meant to go in a pocket, drawer or set in a display.
A customer bought a wolverine jaw and lynx jaw from me then showed me knives made. Id heard of these being used before and it gave me the inspiration, seeing the nice knife my customer made. I figured I could use my lost wax casting as a way to hold the blade to the jaw. Bronze I cast is from old barge propeller off the Yukon River, the same place the ivory is from, and where the lynx was trapped.
I have been practicing ways and techniques to make ivory sheaths. The sliver decoration helps hold it together. lots of small pins persuades the pieces to all act as one. Had some beautiful mammoth ivory that would not work for scales but fit this project.
