M-43 and the Satsuma Tree

We had an unusually long winter in South Louisiana this year. The freezes that we had killed a lemon tree in my yard and a satsuma tree in my daughter's yard. Satsumas are a type of orange that grows well in South Louisiana. They are small and very sweet. Unfortunately, the tree itself is a very hard wood. This entire process would have been much easier with my chain saw, but I wanted to put the HI M-43 to work. As usual, I wasn't disappointed.

The M-43 performed well. This is my favorite Kukuri.

First, the prep work: fine India stone to shape and sharpen

I use a steel or Arkansas stones - soft, hard, and black

If I use Arkansas stones up to and including the black, I don't need to use this strop. At this point, the blade's edge is not thinned, but aligned properly

After the chopping work was completed, it took five strokes with a steel on each side of the blade to have the edge restored.

These are great blades, and I think so highly of HI's M-43 that I have acquired three. I was teaching my oldest grandson how to use the M-43 today. He asked me when he could have one. I told him it would be soon.

The M-43 has enough weight to be a serious chopper, but yet it isn't too heavy or awkward to pack or carry. I like the grip over the traditional, and the enlarged pommel is very beneficial.
