Just picked up one of these but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'm a Glock guy but I really like how this one feels. I know they get rave reviews but I'm just wondering if any of you have shot one extensively and have any tips or things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance.

9mm

I looked at the .40 but they had the 9 priced lower for some reason. I'd have went that route anyway as I'm trying to get everything consolidated down to one caliber. I really like the feel and sight picture. Hopefully I can get to the range after work tomorrow and put a couple hundred rounds thru it.

With safety or without?

They look nice but I prefer the Glock trigger for its nice, crisp, short, reset. I'm waiting for a 43.

My wife carries a 9mm Shield so I have shot one quite a few times. I recall 2 failure to ejects early on but I contributed it to some old ammo her dad had around. Everything we have used since then has worked just fine. Very nice firearm and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Smith & Wesson again.

I pocket carry a 9mm Shield about 50% of the time in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster (size 4 I think). Its about as big as I can comfortably carry in that manner, but you get used to it. Totally different trigger than the Glock. Its small enough to carry, but big enough to handle like a "real" gun.

BTW the M&P Compact is only slightly larger than the Shield so you might check that for comparison !

It has a safety. I'm not a fan but it was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. Worst case scenario is I don't like it and trade it towards another Glock.

Pocket carry is why I bought it. I carry my G27 in my pocket some so this one should be a breeze.

I looked at the compacts but I didn't think there was enough of a difference between it and my G27 to justify getting one.

My daughter has close to a thousand rounds through hers. 9mm. Shoots great. The trigger was a little gritty at first but has since smoothed out pretty good. Great CCW weapon.

I'm sort of a glockoholic and have been (am) interested in the Glock 43. In scanning reviews on youtube, I ran across several comparisions of the G43 vs the S&W Shield in 9mm. Advantages of the Shield include price, about $150 less than the Glock 43 and capacity (8+1 and 7+1) for the Shield compared to 6+1 for the Glock. Also, I like the Shield sights better so I picked one up at the LGS for $375. The G43 would cost about $535 otd here in TN.
Ran a couple mags through the shield and everything works aok. Accurate for a pocket gun. Plan to get to the range later this week and really wring it out.
I still have the G43 on the short list, but for now, the Shield works fine.
YMMV. :)

As it happens, I have a G27 in my pocket right now. I would say that the the Shield is slightly easier to pocket carry because it is a little thinner than the Glock. Its not a chunk in the pocket like the G27.

have been (am) interested in the Glock 43.

The Shield also has a few years of beta testing (consumers) that the G43 does not have. Things often go sideways with new pistols, and I like to wait a year or two before jumping in. But with new Glocks, its not easy to wait.

Well, while it's a nice gun it's not for me. Put some rounds thru it last night and it just didn't do it for me. I was fairly accurate with it but I had a couple feed issues and it's too thin. I'm just too used to Glocks I guess. Oh well, time to move on to the next one, lol.

Well, I think I'm gonna give it some more time. I got frustrated with it too quick. It gets too many good reviews to give up on it this soon. I have Talon grips and a good pocket holster on the way for it. I tore it down and got some of the grittiness out of the trigger. Cleaned the mags up, they actually had quite a bit of crap in them which surprised me. I think that may have led to the feed issues I had. I put another 100+ rounds thru it and it's better. It hits low so I have to remember to hold a couple inches high at 10yds. but I can get a pretty good grouping. I still prefer my G27 but the Shield is growing on me.

If you like your glock trigger try an apex carry kit for the shield. Adds the glock trigger and smooth pull with less take up . The kit goes in without any special tools and lots of Videos online.

Thanks for the tip, I might have to try that. I picked up a good kydex pocket holster for it and I'm starting to see where this gun shines. I've been carrying it for a few days now and most of the time I don't notice it. Can't say that about my Glock.

I've but 300-400 rounds through my Shield 9mm with zero issues. Very accurate for a compact gun. I also have one of the earlier models with the safety but it's stiff enough that I carry with the safety off and don't worry too much about the safety accidentally being bumped into the safe position. There is a good youtube video out there for removing the safety, it looks pretty simple and easy, I've just never bothered to do it to mine.

Since you are used to your Glock and the different grip angle, you may be pushing your wrist down (into the Glock position) and this would cause low shots. Also, depending on if low right or low left, you may be tightening your grip each time you pull the trigger (right) or jerking the mushy trigger because you are used to a more crisp trigger (low left).
