Anyone know the maker of this head. From the searching I have done I think it’s a US made Collins made by Mann, or it’s the made in Mexico version.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

This looks to me like a Mann axe because I've seen one just like it with no M and a homestead stamp
, Now the eye wasn't punched straight but maybe it was just made on a bad day.

In a thread I cant find someone had talked to a former Mann employee who said they were still using this M stamp at a time they were secretly and shadily having heads forged in Mexico.

If you peruse the Lafayette-Plumb section of yesteryeartools you'll find a 3 1/2 over sloped M stamp (also on the right side of a head), that is apparently a Plumb stamp. Have a peek at that and see what you think.

Definitely seams to be some gray area as to when the heads started coming out of Mexico.

Interesting.

All the different patterns and names found with these m stamps and the finish differences would not be surprised if it was both, used it at mann in the states and in mexico.

Thanks for your responses. I was going to bid in the head but it’s looking like the price will be too high. I am not surprised, it’s a nice looking axe.

Good call! If you're gonna fork over excess cash for sure you want proof of providence of the article. There is lots of great stuff (especially in the 3 1/2 lb range) out there, with clear stamps, awaiting new homes and appreciative owners.

As an aside; I doubt that Truper (or whoever it is in Mexico) was, or is, making Rockaway-type heads. Their goods are largely Dayton or Michigan derived. On the other hand the cheeks look to be flat which is not a sign of an old 'Murrican-made'.
