I am thinking of getting a Benchmade 710,I remember you guys talking about m2 steel and how good it was. What I want to know is it stainless? All they desribe it as is toolsteel. Thanks, gordy

Indeed, it's not, but keep in mind that the ATS-34 (now 154-CM, I suppose) that BM uses in their stainless version of the 710 is also susceptible to rust. You'll need to take care of both knives. I have the ATS-34 version (so I can tell you that the 710 is the best knife ever, btw), and if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably get the M2 version, scrub off the coating, and take care of it well.

Either way, get that knife.

Added: And be sure to get the plain-edge version--no reason to defeat the purpose of the recurve with teeth.

M2 is not stainless, but surprisingly, I have had no problem with rust (710HS). It's humid here, most of the year, and I work in a place that is extremely hot alot of the time. The knife gets soaked in sweat frequently. A couple of days ago, I had a water line carrying "industrial water" bust on me, and soak me from head to toe. This stuff is nasty, and very corrosive. For the first time, I got two little specks of rust on the blade, which has most of the finish worn off.
I was cleaning the knife daily, and keeping Tuf-Cloth on it, but lately it has received minimal care (rinse in water, spray all over with WD-40, shake it, wipe it off, and move on). Had I still been using the Tuf-Cloth, I doubt those two specks would have even occurred.
Great knife, and I really like the M2 for its increased toughness over ATS-34. I've had good luck with BM's ATS-34, but my next Benchmade will be a Nimravus Cub, and I'm going to go with M2.

btw, here's the knife:

I have several BM blades in M2. 2 710 HSSR, 4 Minravi (1 cub and 3 full size). One of them has no BT 2 left on it at all. No rust, ever.
Though I live in southern bay area and there's not really humid here.
Anyway, I think if you take minimal care it's gonna be fine, and BM M2 will perform better than BM ATS-34.

Here's 710 HSSR with aluminum handles ;) And Nimravi, in a good shape.

As stated above, M2 is a non-stainless tool steel. It's used to cut other steels and as such it's really tough stuff.

I have not had any problem with my 710 in M2 as far as rusting. I give it a pass with the Tuf-Cloth on a fairly regular basis and have had not even a hint of rust.

BTW, I think you'll find that the 710 is extemely well regarded in "knifedom".

Good luck. :)

Just to add a bit more info, M-2 is a high speed tool steel. It is the same steel used in drill bits and many planer blades too.

I have a Nimravus Cub and a 710, both blades are stripped clean. The Nimravus Cub has never shown a sign of rust even though it lives out in the garage. It's my work-bench knife.

The 710 is my EDC, and just last week I had to break out the wet/dry to remove rust around the thumb stud. It's still a little pitted, since I didn't spend too much time on it. That's the only place it's ever rusted though.

As far as edge-holding, I think that my Nimravus Cub is heat-treated poorly. It's too darn soft to hold an edge well. I cut a lot of cardboard recently, and the Nimravus dulled very quickly. I sharpen it to the standard angles on my Spydie 204 sharpener. In comparison, I have a custom knife in A2 that cut more cardboard, and still shaves hair after a little stropping. Also, I've cut the finger notch a bit deeper on the Nimravus as well as removed the thumb-ramp. I was surprised at how easily a mill file bit into the steel. It was much softer than a cheap stainless kitchen knife that I was playing with.

I've never really abused the edge of my 710 very much. It does seem to hold up to cardboard a bit better though.
