I'm still debating on that $150 to spend. I could use another fixed blade.

Which would you prefer?

Benchmade Nimravus w/ M2
Schott Camp Knife w/ CPM 3V
Bob Dozier Pro Skinner w/ D2

I'd go with the Schott, as I am dying to try that 3V. But if you want satisfaction guaranteed, you can't go wrong with the Dozier. Great work and a real bargain.

Check out the current Schott review under the Knife Reviews and Testing Forum. It's not just the steel--it's also the heat/cryo treat cycling and the geometry of the edge. No one's grinds match Ed's--at this point in time--and his experience with heat/cryo treating 3V is second to none, IMO. I'm fortunate enough to have a fairly representative collection of high performance knives, some of which cost as much as ten times the amount you're talking about. None can match Ed's for cutting performance. Like many, I'm always looking for the next Excalibur, but for the money you can't beat this man's blades. I'll take that a little further: I don't know that you can find a better performer regardless of cost. I haven't.

Take your best--Schott. Before the price goes up.

Go for the Schott Utility Knife in 3V. I think it's $135.00 which is a great price for what you are getting. I just ordered one with a dark green G-10 handle and para cord and can't wait to get it!!
Here is his website: http://www.angelfire.com/ct/schottknives/

How does the leather insert/chord overwrap hold up? I'm planning to use this for my primary backpacking utility knife.

The cord wrap is impregnated with a hardening agent--epoxy probably. Has a very grippy feel and wears like iron. It's not something you're going to unwrap--definitely there to stay!

I own the Dozier Pro Skinner and the Schott Camp knife.

I use both of them as general utility knives.

I have and use several custom knives made in D2 and I love the stuff.

I picked up Ed's 3V knife at a local NCCA show last month and have been using it around the kitchen.

Dozier products are superb for $, but Ed's camp knife in 3V for $100 is a steal!

IMHO, you can't go wrong with EITHER product. The Doziers you can buy all over the place so you can get one within a week.

I am not sure of Ed Schott's waiting list.

If you aren't in a hurry and don't mind waiting, give Ed a shot!

LOL... Ok, that was corny

Ed is kind of low key, and it was great to be able to meet him face to face since I bump into him on BF chat.

3V for pure utility and cutting performance but I think that it will start to look like crap in a hurry unless coated with some Atrocious Black Stuff(tm).

Steels aside, Ed Schott's work looks awesome and more importantly affordable! I'm a sucker for Wharncliffes, so imagine my joy when I saw "Lord Wharncliffe's Mistress" burning into my retinas upon loading Ed's page...

His site say he accepts custom patterns, too. Hmmm... After reading that Steve Ryan article in the new TK and seeing his incredible Wharncliffes with the sharpened false edge, I'm thinking that I may be off to the drawing board...

The only one that I own is a Nimravus (Cub) in M2. I can tell you for certain that the M2 Nimravus will do what you ask of it. However, for the given amount of money, my order would be:

  • Ed's Camp Knife in 3v
Dozier's D2 anything, but I'd probably spend a little extra and go for the Pro Guide
    Nimravus M2

Concurr! Ed Schott does great work and the CPM3V does cut well! I had one of his knives a while back and move it to Will York, who in turn not only likes the knife but ordered another from Ed also! That knife really sliced well, and though I didn't do a lot of chopping with it, it really took DEEP bites into the wood and would chop limbs off with little or no effort, due to the thinness that is possible with the 3V steel.

So, yeah, glad to hear you are going to get ED.....

I've demonstrated the sharpness of that knife by doing things none of my other knives will. Amazing in such a big blade.

One thing Gary didn't mention was that he put a custom black G2 sheath on the Mistress before shipping her to Texas. So she's properly gowned in some very sleek leather and shows off her curves whether dressed or not. Eat your hearts out, guys. She's home to stay!

Thanks again, Gary.
