M4 bayonet

I found this in some old attic boxes. The leather handle is tight, as is the guard. What would cause the separation at the ricasso? Is there a way to repair that if necessary?

looks like the leather has dried out and shrank. You can attempt to rehydrate the leather using multiple treatments of Obenauf's leather oil. The other option would be to add another leather washer or 2 to the handle. Adding leather washers would probably hurt the collector value even if done well.

Can you post a pic of the butt? Is the plate tight and intact?

Not a real M-4. One of those Japanese knock offs for the "surplus store" trade in the late 60's early 70's.

Sidehill is right. It is marked Japan, so not an M4

If the guard is tight and won’t move closer to the blade. Then that is how it was made.
