M4 contego vs s110v PM2

I am having a REALLY hard time deciding between the two. I edc a 560bw and a 808 loco and love them both, I personally like overbuilt folders. What I am really wanting is to try something with really good edge holding, I have not tried either steels but am no noob when I comes to sharpening,(got the 560 elmax to a HHT 4 level with a hand done convex) so the sharpening factor on s110v doesn't scare me. I like the 810's robustness and have read it is a good slicer but have read a lot about the pm2 and how good it is plus the steel it has.

Just not sure if the pm2 is stout enough or if the s110v is all its cracked up to be(have read some bad reviews of the steel)
Kinda want to try a good slicer but amy a little scared about the tip on the pm2

What would you all chose and why?
Crapp..sorry...just realized I posted this in the wrong area. Please move

I believe they say s110v for slicing and m4 for strength. I have neither but have done a lot of studying on both (and s90v). I just placed an order for my first cpm-m4 blade. A 908BK-1501. Next will be a 940-1 in s90v. I expect the 908BK-1501 to take one hell of a beating/abuse and the 940-1 to hold a bit more of a keen edge. Not sure how far apart they are in retention but it sounds like they're pretty close.

edit: *Also if you don't already know* M4's corrosive resistance isn't considered the best. Sacrificing corrosive resistance for pretty outstanding strength. Pretty much the only category this steel falls short of the other super steels. You should never have a problem with s110v rusting/corroding. M4 will require a bit more upkeep/maintenance/oiling.

Yea, I knew that about m4 and that does not bother me at all as the ocd will keep that in check...lol

Look at the Manix 2 S110V and Gayle Bradley in M4.

Yea, I have looked at both of them and really wasn't drawn to them, these two have been on my radar for a while.
I will use it for whatever I come in contact with within reason. Mostly cardboard, plastic bottles, zip ties, wood, packaging, stripping wire. Having said that, I will not use it on something I think will damage the edge at all, they make box cutters for that...lol

Hey Nick! I have both steels and love each one. Neither will disappoint you.
I'd like to comment on the 810. I am a BM fan......big time.....and I love the looks of the 810, BUT the handles on that knife are brutal. If you don't wear gloves you will have a sore hand. Way to aggressive!
The PM2 is amazing ergonomically! The tip is only fragile if you drop it onto concrete. It won't be a problem with normal use.
Unless you are able to handle the 810 go with the Spydie!!
Good luck!
Joe

The 810 is a tank, but the pm2 is no slouch. M4 will suffer far less damage than s110v when the edges are pushed. The pm2 is much more useable.
1st choice for me is a pm2 with m4 blade. 2nd choice is the 810 with m4 blade.

I think the m4 will be better but I am a little worried about it rusting in my back pocket. I am a welder and sweat a lot and a lot of times when I take my 560 out at the end of the day the blade is coated with water from sweat, albeit I do wipe it off.
I was planning on modding the handle of the 810 from everything I have read about it be to aggressive. Already did a handle mod on the contego 183 fixed.
Micro chipping is a pain as it is prevalent on my 560 and I personally do not like that. I would think the coated contego blade would hold up better than the pm2 uncoated with corrosion.

If you're worried about your'e cutting load causing chipping I would go m4.

Those handles looks awesome by the way.

Btw...I do like my edges to be tree topping sharp ALL the time, I do daily touch ups if I have to on the strop and think I have read that most all steels will lose that level pretty quick but am looking for something better than elmax and s30v. One thing I do is trim the cuticle around my fingers and that generally takes a pretty fine edge, almost scapel like edge. The easier it is to push cut skin the safer it is, one slip or if I am sawing on it can be bad

You would not believe what they did for the knive, completely transformed the way it feels and handles. Fills the hand a lot more and has no hard edges

I wouldn't worry at all about the M4 Contego rusting, I sweat worse than most people, and work near salt water, and never had any issues with it rusting in my pocket.

That's what I like to hear. I think I have FINALLY decided the contego will better suit my needs with some work on it, which I don't mind at all. I'm kinda like Tim Allen, can't leave anything alone

What would a good bevel be for m4, I'm partial to a 17dps with no micro bevel, just what I am used to. Good cutting and strength combo

I have both of the knives mentioned, except my Contego is in the M390 steel. Hate to say it but I've never carried the Contego. When I got it I opened the box and was like OMG, what a knife! Knew right away it was bigger than what I wanted to carry. So sadly, he just sits in his box in the safe.

The PM2 though gets carried a lot. I got the Blurple one and really like it. So much so that I found another one on the exchange here with aftermarket digicam scales and the S110V and got it too, lol. The tips on them are pretty fine though if you don't like that.

Kind of a good in between to me would be a Benchmade 710. I really like them. Have one in M4 and one in D2. Great knives.

Well, good luck on your choice. Of course really you should get both. Then you wouldn't have to choose!

I'll get both. I'll go half in on it, I get the contego and you get the pm2 and just send it to me....lol

I don't think the size will be that bad, I edc a 560 and the blade on it is 3.75", so a 1/4" isn't going to kill it for me. But if I don't like it I know what the next one will be. ;-)

I've had Contego and it was certainly sturdy. However, the PM2 is plenty tough as well, and by far my preferred blade. I would say get a PM2 in M4. They are on the exchange all the time, and can be had for around what a Contego costs. The ergos are better IMO, and it carries better.

i love my pm2 and its a very capable cutter but it does lack that rock solid feel that i enjoy in other folders. just a smidge of wiggle here and there that i don't have in say, a gb1, american lawman or loco for example.

Actually handled the contego and the loco before I bought the loco...SUPERIOR comfort and ergonomics, but I still like the contego.
Now, if the loco was in m4 or similar, I would be in heaven. BTW...the loco is a VERY good slicer at .015 behind the edge
