I am considering ordering a M43 khukuri for use in Iraq. How thick is the back of the blade. Can the blade be honed to a razor-sharp edge? How does the M43 model rate as an all purpose khukuri?

Thickness varies...you can ask Yangdu for a specific one.

Razor sharp? Near razor...but with the advantages of a convex edge. These are not used for shaving...they chop. The edge geometry is very different...stronger and longer lasting while still being terrific choppers.

The M43s are typically about 5/16" to 3/8" thick. They have the length and weight for an all-purpose khukuri. Like most any good khuk, they can be honed pretty damn sharp.

Check the specific regs in your specific situation. You may not be able to have it over there.

Previous discussion showed that what can be brought over and kept in kit is restricted, and may be limited in case-by-case situations.

Be well and safe.

I would be one of many to say a M 43 is one of the best of all khukuries. The shape and weight is superb. The M 43 used to be the most desirable khukurie on the forums for a long time It was my first and bought a second but a old friend visiting liked it so much I gave one to them. Of course we were camping at the time and its' usefullness was amazing.

As a veteran, I was told [ordered] to do alot of things 30 years ago. I ignored most when it came to my welfare. The old saying is true, "what they don't know won't hurt them".

ONLY YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR UNIT WILL TOLERATE.

When our group went through jump school in Ft Benning, they confiscated our knives. Some of the guys had high grade switch blades. I was platoon seargent and went to the mickey mouse CO and got them all back to their owners. So it depends on who your NCO leaders are and their time in service and rank to get things done.

I wish you the best, and thank you for your service to our country.

The M-43 is a great and big khukri. It ought to be able to handle anything you can throw at it.
Don't overlook the "small" khukris. The 12" -15" Sirupatis and Ang Kholas are very effective and much less sword-like - which may be an advantage (or not?)...depending on the purpose. Not in the same league with the M-43 though. Just thought I'd mention them, since they are easily overlooked.
Good luck, and thanks for your service. Keep us informed.
