What are these things like? I really haven't heard much about them though I've seen many go on the daily deals. What is the weight and balance like on these hanshees?

Skeletor, the Kesar made M43 I had was quite blade heavy. IE the balance point was more towards the tip and sweet spot. Loved the curved handle, it felt really good in the hand. To me it felt more weapon then garden tool, but it did feel like it would handle brush or even chopping really well.:)

I never got around to using/testing it before I sold it (had to pay bills:(). Though I did Walosify it.:) If I had the money and another like the one I had became avaliable, I'd grab it and fast.:D

I like this Burha-made hanshee-ish khukuri a lot - probably my favourite HI - balance seems very nice. I must admit I haven't tried very much chopping with it though.

Is that your Hanshee? Those pics are what made me fall in love with the thing. I don't suppose either of you have weights on your Hanshees?

Here are the real things.
M43: 17.25", 1lb 10oz
hanshee: 17.4", 1lb 3oz

I am not a martial artist, but I find the hanshee much 'faster' although the forward weight of the M43 exudes more power and confidence of doing more damage with less work. I am not familiar with the new versions being made by BirGorkha so can't comment.

Ah, Mr. Powell, 'tis almost a physical suffering not having that M43.

Would you post the technical definition of 'hanshee' wrt: shape, handle, etc? I've always thought it was a khuk whose spine/handle profile is smoothly circular, but that describes both of these.

Thanks,
Joe

yes, that's one is mine. :)

I went and weighed it - the scale I use is probably not entirely accurate, but it seemed to weigh in close to 1.5 pounds. it feels very light in my hand - it's very well-balanced. that's the one complaint I sometimes have with HI khukuris, that they're a bit on the heavy-side. Burha, in my experience, tends to make lighter, thinner khukuris, which I like.

JP's real hanshees are no doubt 'faster'. But the Burha one I have is quite nice too.

Beo, yours is a beauty, too. I like the look without the buttcap.

If you want, I could remove that nasty red rouge for you...

And, no, I am not affiliated with M. le Canard.

Joe,
I don't know about this being technical, but the most obvious thing regarding hanshees is the narrow blade, the thin double handed grip and the simple and sometimes shallow cho with a small protrusion.

A hanshee isn't neccesarily part of a 'circle' like the M43. Some hanshees have an extreme curve angle, while others are as shallow as a sirupati. In fact many of them are identified by the slight shoulder which is best found by feel rather than sight. I always run my hand along the spine with my eyes closed to find where it is and how extreme the angle. A very subtle piece of blademaking.

The grip is always a single piece with a partial tang whether it is wood, metal, horn or ivory.

Ah, compliments. Skeletor, you know just how to get me to post more images of my collection. Now if I could just get BEO to take all the pictures and you would have the best of both worlds.
