Just some random thoughts there... No particular order, just looking into the metallurgy of W1, and then the O1 and S7 that I use. Had a friend do a differentially hardened 4140 tanto, and then came across these interesting steels called M7 and 496.

Never so much as even heard of it, never seen a single blade made from it, thought, 'hmm, maybe I'll try it.' There's probably a good reason it's not done, but with the below composition, why not?

Best,

Darryl

AISI M7 - C 1, Cr 4, V 2, W 1.75, Mo 8.75

496 Oil Hardening - C .90, Cr .50, Mn 1.20, W .50, V .20

*--* Now, it looks to me like 496 is pretty much in O1's ballpark, but with .20 more manganese, and .20 in Vanadium. Any guesses on the end difference between the two (on the belts, and in the hand)?

The 496 would certainly make a good blade. The M7 would not be as suitable and would be a bit rough on the belts.
