M9 bayonet modifications?

I did a search of the forum and the Internet and didn't find what I was looking for. I want to do project involving mods to a stock M9 bayonet as a gift to a servicemember I know. I want to remove the plastic handles and replace them with something like G10. On that new G-10, I want to grind/carve out a space for a badge. I'll also polish the metal bits.

I have an M9 bayonet but I've never dismantled it. If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, etc, please offer them up!

Thanks,
Doug

Sounds like a cool gift but just don't modify the business end in any way. Modified weapons can get a troop in a heap of trouble: Even if they don't use it.

Here's a link to the M9 manual. Pages 30-38 cover the M9 in detail.

Looks like it would be a nice project. I wouldn't worry about your buddy getting into trouble as it's a gift from you. He'd definately be in some hot water if he modded one that was issued to him though. Maybe that's what JW was talkng about.

Jim,
Thanks for the link!

I wasn't worried about the mod being a problem for my friend as 1) it's an M9 I bought and 2) he's senior enough that no one will question it. One of my former squadron commanders had a chrome-plated section of GAU-8 barrel (30mm cannon in the A-10) framed and on his office wall.

I looked at the diagram and it's assembled the way I expected. The hardest part will be polishing the sawback but I think I can get it.

Maybe bead blast the sawback and 2-tone the finish? Sound like a nice display piece for your buddy. Good luck with the project and post some pictures if you get a chance.
