The "M9 / Phrobis III / U.S.A." is listed in U.S. Military Knives Bayonets and Machetes Price Guide, Forth Edition (Silvey, Boyd, Trzaska) on page 27 at $150 - $200 for a piece in "Excellent Unsharpened" condition.

The conditions given in the reference guide for "Excellent Unsharpened" are as follows:
- NO blade wear
- handles may not be loose
- polished blades may have slight discoloration
- parkerized or blues blades may have slight loos of color due to sheath wear
- knife must have proper sheath
- sheath must be original
- sheath, if leather, may show slight discoloration

Since your M9 has been sharpened, it may then fall into the "Excellent" category. These conditions are as follows:
- may have been used but shows no blade wear
- up to 10% of original finish may be missing from the blade
- leather may be dried out
- all markings must be clear

"Excellent" condition pieces should be adjusted to around 80% of "Excellent Unsharpened" pieces. "Mint" = 150%, "Very Good" = 60%, and "Good" = 40%.

All of the above info was taken from:
U.S. Military Knives Bayonets and Machetes Price Guide, Forth Edition (Silvey, Boyd, Trzaska)

Hope this healps

If I remember correctly buck created the prototype, and phrobis picked up the contract. When I was in the military (88-96) the phrobis never did to well. many didnt like its weight.

as far as value, realistically its probably worth about a $100 dollars in said condition, and you have to remember most books seem to exaggerate values (or it seems). It all depends if you have a party thats really interested in it. Thats just been my experience with certain collectable knives, especially military. Im sure if you hold on to it for some years its position would improve some.
