I was wondering if I could have someone help me out with this knife my father gave me. It’s a M9 Phrobis III but it doesn't have the Buck markings on the opposite side of the blade. Instead it’s engraved by hand the numbers “716/81”

Could you post some photos for us to see?

Buck was not the only one that manufactured these, Ontario, Lancay, Tri-Tech made them, and there are copies and counterfeits out there as well.

The fed was auctioning off these by the pallet full a while back, I was bidding but when they got to over 40.00 each I let them go. I am not sure what the hand engraved numbers mean maybe someone here knows. I know there are some regrind out there by someone sorta famous.

Yeah I don’t know, my father has had this for years and gave it to me about 2 years ago just started looking into it and wanted to see what kinda history it had

Thanks can see the pictures now.
I'm no expert, but at first glance that looks like a Buck manufactured Phrobis III from the
Phrobis dolphin logo on the guard and sheath. The US Pat Pending line (Army 4-liner) as well as no marks on the
right side ricasso suggests a Generation 4 military contract knife from 1987/88/89.
But no idea about the 716/81 on the ricasso and sheath as they look
very "hand added" by someone, But it must be significant (to someone)
cause it's added in 3 locations.
Maybe some else here could shed some light on those numbers.
