M9LE vs SHBM!

Well I don't HAVE A M9LE . . . yet. But I do have a SHBM and a Muddy M6. Plus a NMSFNO.

As I stated day-1 and was confirmed by others, the M9 blade profile is so SHBM it's scary. And the handle is pretty straight, but different.

I was asked to do some measuring and take some pitchaz. Here dey is:

SHBM
.27" smoothcoat INFI
Handle ranges from .775" thick at the palmswell to .715" at the narrowest point. The handle is 1.415" tall at the widest point of the palmswell. (measured parallel to the slabs.)

M6
.245 crinklecoat SR101
Handle ranges from .760" thick at the palmswell to .710" at the narrowest point. The handle is 1.515" tall at the widest point of the palmswell.

Shockingly, the M9LE will be DANGED close to the handle size of a SHBM. A bit taller and not as pronounced in the swell of the G10 handles, but very close. The only thing it don't have is the curved butt to stop your hand from sliding off. A good lanyard would solve that.

Here are some comparison pix with a NMSFNO in there for good measure. I will say the pix are deceiving b/c the small stature of the M6 blade. Imagine a blade almost as tall/wide as the SHBM attached to that handle. YEAHBABY YEAH!

I caved.

I was putting it off, didnt really need one.

Ordered one last night.

So damned pretty I couldnt resist. My first taste of SR101!

Now the wait....

Close or not, I've pretty much decided I am going to go without. And my decision really has nothing to do with the M9; rather it's just that I love my SHBM so much, I can't imagine anything in its size range beating it, even at the crazy prices SHBMs command. YMMV.

Thanks Dennis... you rock!!!

I'm still on the fence too... but at the price, I don't know if I can resist. :o

Does the Bully usually give a "closing pre-orders" heads up?

Thanks again for all the measurements... and the pics!

I think you're right. But ... I'm going to experiment with this one.

Still on the fence. I REALLY want a big chopper from the Swamp, and since I don't own a ShaBOOM, I can't use OTEs angle (but man I want a ShaBOOM badly!!). The handle is the one thing keeping me on the fence. Great comparison Dennis! It helps!

I'm going to have to fondle my M6 over the weekend...

:p

I don't know if the M9LE will unseat the NMSFNO as my favorite blade in that size category but I'm willing to give it a shot to see.

Did I have one for you to handle in VA last year??? I can't remember, I'm getting old. If not, hook up with Jamie b/c I KNOW he has some. I'm sure he'll let you swing one around.

Don't have and never even handled a SHBM. Sold my FFBM because it was a little too clunky for me and also sold my NMFBM because I was poor :grumpy: I would love a CGFBM but I don't really have the money for one right now. I do have a NMSFNO but that is more of a weed whacker than a CHOPPER. Needless to say I can't wait for this bad boy to arrive!  It almost looks too pretty to use...that is until you give it its first good thumping. :D

At our get together last month, Trevor brought an SHBM, and Jamie brought a Basic 9. I pretty much fell in love with both!!

While the M9 LE won't supplant those (based on pics alone) may be worth a try!! Great price too! I'll be fondling my M6 handle this weekend while I decide.

Got an angle on a Basic 9, but will have to wait... ShaBooms are wild pricey. Would have to drop a bunch of what I have now to snag one... :(

The Basic 9 has the handle going for it. But it doesn't have the mass of a SHBM or M9LE. I loved my B9 but I felt the blade would never have the bite a BM would.

(No, I never used it. It was MINT. So I couldn't bring myself to do so.)

Just let me know when you want to try any of these. I've got 'em if you need 'em. I just thought you guys out to get a really close look at the Basic 9. That's a great knife that just doesn't get enough respect!:D

I have to get at least one M9. Just based on the pics, I think it could be another really great knife. But we just can't tell without getting our mitts on it.
