Folks from MA might want to monitor this bill closely, as well as begin writing their reps. This bill attempts to redefine the word dagger, to include boot knives, combat knives, and fighting knives(the latter two being very vague). This bill also adds butterfly knives to the prohibited list.

"i. “dagger”, a bladed instrument designed for use as a weapon, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, push-knife, boot knife, combat knife, or fighting knife;"

Nothing has changed in amending this section (now subsection) aside from some cleaning up of the text (removing slung shot as a descriptive for instance). Stabbing instrument has also moved from the dagger paragraph to clarify things a bit. It is to me as some are reading MA regulations for the first time.

Where are the cane swords? Oh joy!!!!

Please do read and understand this part particularly before crying wolf and claiming foul.

........that is possessed during the commission of any felony or misdemeanor, or that is used or intended to be used in an assaultive or otherwise unlawful manner;

Have a good one

Compare the amended subsection of 269 to what was a real mess to read

(b) Whoever, except as provided by law, carries on his person, or carries on his person or under his control in a vehicle, any stiletto, dagger or a device or case which enables a knife with a locking blade to be drawn at a locked position, any ballistic knife, or any knife with a detachable blade capable of being propelled by any mechanism, dirk knife, any knife having a double-edged blade, or a switch knife, or any knife having an automatic spring release device by which the blade is released from the handle, having a blade of over one and one-half inches, or a slung shot, blowgun, blackjack, metallic knuckles or knuckles of any substance which could be put to the same use with the same or similar effect as metallic knuckles, nunchaku, zoobow, also known as klackers or kung fu sticks, or any similar weapon consisting of two sticks of wood, plastic or metal connected at one end by a length of rope, chain, wire or leather, a shuriken or any similar pointed starlike object intended to injure a person when thrown, or any armband, made with leather which has metallic spikes, points or studs or any similar device made from any other substance or a cestus or similar material weighted with metal or other substance and worn on the hand, or a manrikigusari or similar length of chain having weighted ends; or whoever, when arrested upon a warrant for an alleged crime, or when arrested while committing a breach or disturbance of the public peace, is armed with or has on his person, or has on his person or under his control in a vehicle, a billy or other dangerous weapon other than those herein mentioned and those mentioned in paragraph (a), shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than two and one-half years nor more than five years in the state prison, or for not less than six months nor more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction, except that, if the court finds that the defendant has not been previously convicted of a felony, he may be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction.

Petitioning to return to that is folly of the worst kind. Please do keep these things in context as they are written and purposes.

CHAPTER 269

CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC PEACE

All the regulation regarding edged weapons and tools speaks directly to intent, not lawful ownership. (at least as I read it and live by)

Cheers

I don't have a problem with most of the changes made aside from the definition of a dagger.

As I'm reading it, this is the only section in the proposed bill that mentions intent.
; or any other knife having a blade length of greater than 3 ½ inches that is possessed during the commission of any felony or misdemeanor, or that is used or intended to be used in an assaultive or otherwise unlawful manner; This, I believe, means that any common pocketknife with a blade length of greater than 3 ½ inches, that is used or possessed during a crime is prohibited regardless of the fact that it isn't prohibited when carried lawfully.

Butterfly knives weren't included in the older version either.

I know it's not a knife but it may fall under this.

vi. “disguised knife”, any knife designed so that it is not readily recognizable as a knife, and appears instead to be some non-threatening item such as a lipstick, pen, belt buckle, air gauge, or any other common item;

Where do you see intent mentioned in current law. I'm not being sarcastic, can you lead me to that text?

No idea. The section you quoted isn't current law, it's from the proposed bill.

I'm already safe from these things as a Bostonite...
There's no way I can get any more restricted except perhaps moving to NYC :p

It figures it was sponsored by Nangle. He is from Lowell, which is a real crime-plagued craphole of a city. Asian gangs there are killing each other with illegal firearms, so this clown wants to ban addditional categories of knives. Only in Massachusetts, the bastion of Kennedy-style liberalism! :(
