Just moved up from windows 98 and dial up to a new imac and broadband. Wow.

Anyway, I am looking for thoughts in wich mail client to use. I guess my choices are the one that comes with the mac, Thunderbird and Entourage.

Any comments or suggestions?

I personally really like the one's that came with my Mac. I use "Mail" the most. My spouse uses Entourage,, and loves it.

+1 on the Mac Mail. Simple, efficient, "learns" how to filter junk mail and sp*m in a couple of days (depending on your volume), can change colors and fonts easily, add custom features with a few clicks.

I have been a home Mac user for about five years now, and there is no way I would switch to Windows (which I have to use at work :barf: )

Thanks for the replys. I don't want this to turn into a mac vs pc war, but after one week I love it. And of coarse the broadband we have now is loooong overdue and soooo nice!

I am used to outlook express at work and am wondering if any of the clients are more like it than another?

Congratulations on choosing an excellent computer! I have used Entourage for 6-7 years. I like it a lot because of a few reasons: 1) It is very powerful in its integration with Microsoft Office if you're using all its powers. 2) It's nice to have contacts, email, schedule, alerts, all in one app, all open at once. 3) I have two old Hotmail accounts that I still use quite a bit, so I can still check those accounts, which Mail wouldn't be able to do.

Mail is cool, and it is tightly integrated within the Mac, but to get the same functionality out of it, you need to have Address Book and iCal (although Mozilla's Sunbird is nice, too) open and running, too. It seems like iCal uses a lot of RAM, to me, but I haven't analyzed everything to see.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with any of them. I actually have several business email accounts, my two hotmail accounts, my knifemaking website account and a Gmail account. I check and manage a couple of them with Mail and the rest with Entourage! Use 'em all! :)

Thanks for the great reply chiro, I did go with Entourage, and tried the other night to set up my hotmail with the mac mail, but looks like I need a business account to do that.

By the way, you are one of the old class acts on here that makes this a great place!

There's no room for that kind of behavior on an internet discussion forum, sir. What are you trying to do, put us moderators out of business? ;):)

Class act? Jeez, I usually get accused of being a pariah! I must be slipping... :D Oh, and I'm only 32, so I hope I don't come off as being crusty!

Yeah, several years ago now Hotmail decided to limit access to its accounts from Entourage and Outlook. Pretty ironic, no? Using a Microsoft email address and an expensive Microsoft software, and they wouldn't even let you check your email unless you get online to do it. If I had to guess, it probably had to do with the advertising that is plastered over every inch of the online site!

So, they changed from having free access to Hotmail via Entourage to requiring a paid account, which made lots of people mad. I guess the funtionality is very, very inconsistent, too.

Anyway, they DID grandfather the accounts that were already in existence, so I can still check my two Hotmail accounts using Entourage (and now Mail, see below). I will say that Hotmail access from Entourage has been REALLY sketchy at times. Most recently I couldn't access my accounts anymore, and then learned that in another attempt to screw their paying customers, Microsoft was now limiting access to Hotmail only using Microsoft 2004, and I was still using MS Office X from a few years ago.

SOOOOO.... I upgraded and that worked, a little, but then I started getting constant error messages of different types. I would delete an email, then it would download it again, etc etc. REALLY annoying.

At this same time I have been using iCal for the past couple months for all my calendar use, so I decided to utilize Mail more since I was already going away from Entourage's calendar function. There is a free plugin for Mail available out there called "httpmail." It's a plugin that, when you go to create a new Account, gives you an "httpmail" option. I don't know the ins and outs, but I do know that it will allow you to check your Hotmail again if you either have a paid account or a grandfathered account.

So, I spent a couple hours last night setting all my folders up, etc etc to keep things organized. I think once I use mail some more than I'll really learn to appreciate it!

Apple's Mail program that comes with OS X is what I'm using now, have had no problems with it so far. I use SpamSieve to keep the spam out(with 10 email accounts being downloaded, it can pile up fast).

In the past I used Eudora, but switched when Eudora couldn't keep up with the load(at the time 2 accounts). Yeah, it seems that a mailbox can't be opened when you hit the 1GB mark...

Switching can be painful after years of using the same product, but when it just starts crashing on you there isn't much left to do. Mail imported the old mailboxes with no problem and has been chugging along ever since. I guess I've trimmed back, my Mail folder is only 290 MB right now.

I refuse to use Microsoft products for anything serious, so Entourage is out.

Thanks, everybody, for the good info on e-mail. I'm a "codger" and an iMac (they are bulletproof) is the only computer I've ever used. I just switched from an AOL dial-up connection to a DSL connection from a local ISP company. (Tip: Don't EVER, EVER, EVER get involved with AOL!!!) I love the speed at which I can download images and videos now with DSL, but I'm struggling with a clumsy e-mail arrangment via Explorer. Your suggestions may help. I'll run them by my wife, who is a lot smarter than I am in these matters.

Oh my God, Explorer? Definitely use the included Mail app. You will be very glad you did.
