I just switched.

Several days ago I purchased an apple ibook G4, 12" screen. Prior to, i've been using my home-built pc, windows os, built into a toolbox.

The switch is killing me.

I can't seem grasp the mac OS concept. Don't get me wrong, this computer is VERY easy to figure out. In fact, it's so simple, that i find myself overthinking how to do things (having a windows-based mindset). I've been playing with this thing for days, but can't seem to understand the structure or platform of OSX. it's like all these applications are intertwined-- my mail program runs through this address book program which is intertwined w/ safari and word and yadda yadda yadda. Stuff like that. Or a better example-- yesterday i wanted to save a picture that someone sent me in an AIM chatbox. now normally, i'd right click, "save as," and choose a directory for the windows OS to save. but on this mac, there's only one mouse button. i tried clicking. i tried ctrl-clicking. i tried apple button-clicking. i went to file, looked for a save option. i tried copying/pasting to this "iphoto" thing, or "iview" or whatever. i spent like half an hour trying to save a damn picture.

didn't even think about something simple as dragging/dropping the image onto my desktop. sigh...

so my question is, is there a tutorial online that i can read up on? i'm just trying to get a grasp of how to use this thing. school/work/army training is beginning again and i won't have a lot of time to be dicking around on my computer.

mainly what i'm interested in is keyboard commands. i like keyboards. hate mouses.

any help would be appreciated.

oh, btw, don't get me wrong. this computer is great! it's just me, i can't friggin' understand it.

My first Mac was a Plus in 1990, with a whopping 60 MEG EXTERNAL hard drive! I used Macs for a long time, then switched to PCs. Can't remember why. Anyway, Last year I wanted a new laptop, was really impressed with the 12" Powerbook, bought it, love it. Just replaced my old desktop with a new Mac mini, so it's all mac, all the time.

See if this is any help to you:
http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

Lots of stuff on the apple.com website.

I have always been a Mac user!! I am currently running a 4 year old Titanium Power Book G4. (It was top of the line when it was purchased.)

I grew up in the DOS world, used Windows since 3.0, but at work, I'm a Unix sysadmin, so while I hate Windows with a passion, I used it because it was relatively easy, had the programs I wanted, etc.

Then, when Apple went to OSX, with unix at it's core, it was a simple switch :) It's comical to me that my laptop, a mobile platform, has an uptime of days or weeks, while all of the Windows boxes I know either reboot by themselves daily, or need to be to resolve problems.

OSX can be as simple or complex as you wish it to be. Some things are done wierd in OSX but overall I'm pretty happy with it. I especially like the fact that it's much, much less vulnerable to the virus du'jour. :D

Anyhow, to answer your question, you might wanna try a 2 or 3 button mouse - the support is there for them and they really make transitioning from unix or Windows a lot easier, as the right-click, context-sensitive mouse stuff is really nice (and there by default).

Enjoy!

Yeah, the best way to learn the Mac OS X is to keep in mind the following rule:

If you think it should do it this way, try it...I bet it does!

Apple excels at building an intuitive interface. For online tutorials, once again, just look up...at the menu bar of your Mac. See the "Help" menu? It's all there. We all overlook the obvious! Use the index, or search on keyboard. You'll find most of what you want.

MAC users, check in!

I can't provide assistance, but just wanted to check in. I have a pile of 'em. Mostly early-90s models like various lc models, one or two Performas, a couple of notebooks, and a Power Computing Mac clone. None of mine are capable of running OSX though, so I have no idea what you're talking about. :)

There are other computers besides Macs?
The graphic art world runs on macs so I never had a choice.
There must be a 'Dummies' book on OSX too.

That help menu can be a life saver too ;)

drag n drop
double click
command+ what ever letter you think may work...
O for open
S for save
They are all your friends
:D

I got a Mac OSX 10.13, they're new OSX 10.40 is out already,a bud of mine got one.OSX's are as simple to use as heck or as frustrating as can be,as previously posted for help there is the Apple.com website.

Yah, the one button mouse... Click and hold - that will give you a "right click" menu. I read somewhere that Mac is moving to a two button mouse.

I'll have a Mac notebook some day but I won't be running Mac OS on it. I'll be running Debian GNU Linux which is what I've been running for a few years now. I've never had a Kernel crash, never ever.

Temporary fix for saving pics,click on pic,drag to right,open iPhoto,drag pic(s) in.Pic(s) saved.

Good Lord, Macs are NOT that complicated!! But, then I have always been a mac user.

Or...you could just drag the photo to the ipix icon in the tool bar at the bottom of your screen

Like all things in life, it just takes a moment to get your head around it. I switched a couple of years ago, and don't plan on going back anytime soon. When I am in front of my own computer with my bookmarks, i will try to get back to you.

Just switched (at home) to am iMac g4 running OS9.4something. This weekend I am upgrading to OSX and excited about it. My wife and I (while in college) used macs and I used both - it is nice to be back to this world. Alittle transition time, but mainly an easy switch.

Will OSX be THAT much different?

well, i dunno how differentt OSX will be from the older versions... BUT i've been playing with this for hours every night (i'm addicted) and i LOVE IT!

Another Mac user here, I started with a Mac because I heard it was the best for doing graphics and I've stayed with it. I learn best by using a book, either the Dummies books or Easy In Color book for the OS version you're using. Mac Help is also great for fast answers. I think the Mac OS is just really easy to learn and fall in love with.

Turns out I may be buying my first PC the only reason is I want to play Hold 'Em Poker online and most of the best sites are PC only. So I'm looking into a wireless laptop.

i'm more and more picking up my keyboard commands, which is nice and making me faster.

you know what i miss? my "delete" key. the ibookg4 doesn't have one. is there a keyboard command that i can use to automatically trash a highlighted item?

thanks.

cool, i'll try it.

thanks.

how about a k.cmd for rename files?

sorry for all the questions.
