Well I did it I bought the MacBook Pro I've been wanting to buy for a few months now. Starting college I decided that it would not only be a good time to get a new computer around the house but that I would be better off getting a laptop that I could take to school with me. Unfortunately being behind the times I had to buy a Wifi base too. So any mac users out there wanna chime in, seeing as this cost me a large chunk of my dad's savings for me (not specifically college) I would appreciate some encouraging words. Thanks.

What are they supposed to chime in about? Just encouragement or did you need help with your computer? Sorry your post isn't clear.

Sorry it was really late when I made that post, anyways, I was looking for anyone that had good recommendations about software tips tricks, hidden or less known features, just general info from already users. Encouragement is nice after spending so much for a laptop. :D

Don't know if you're a programmer or not but if you are you will love TextWrangler, or the shareware TextMate. SubEthaEdit and Smultron are good too but TW is my favorite.

Other useful freebies:
FTP: Cyberduck
Bittorrent: Transmission
Chat: AdiumX
File management (where'd all my free space go?): Disk Inventory X / Grand Perspective
Wifi finder: iStumbler 2
Application launcher: Quicksilver
Nocturne -- cool little app when you're working at night and don't want to disturb the roommate
DC++ client: Shakespeer

Pay apps:
iConquer -- great RISK-like game
Disco -- excellent, simpler alternative to Toast for CD/DVD burning
MacHeist -- a website that offers insanely good deals on shareware bundles from time to time

Apple users are lucky there is such a vibrant developer base interested in creating polished, simple and easy to use applications for free or for small amounts of money. We use Macs at work for everything from programming to media creation and we pretty much never need to boot Windows for anything. I'm sure you will love your Macbook Pro. My Powerbook G4 has seen me through part of high school and college and I think I'm going to be getting a few more years of good use out of it.

Just wondering what made you decide to get the Pro, instead of just a plain old Macbook...

I don't like Open Office. I tried to give it a fair shot, but I just couldn't stand the sluggishness and everything. MS Office 2K4 is great, IMHO far better than the Windows counterparts. I have not tried 2K8 and don't have much intention to do so until I make the jump to Snow Leopard.

A) I got the MacBook Pro because I WILL be taking some graphic arts classes, as well as using CAD for engineering.

B) I did order Office 2008 with the student discount.

C) I got a free iTouch go me :p

65535 you made a good choice.
Up until I got my MacBook (plain) a year ago, I was using Windows. The stability of Leopard is great.
