I watch the show often and did when I was young as well. Kinda of corny, but always enjoyable when you are bored. I was always a bit pissed that he wouldn't use a gun...

As for the SAK I think it changed quite often. He used so many different gadgets that I don't see on just one SAK... The most often seen knife though had a small number of layers. Around 3 or 4 I think.

This thread was covered a little while ago...maybe a search would turn it up.
Anyways, the conclusion is that he used whichever sak had the tools that were needed for each particular episode. :p

Here are some of the SAKs he used: Executive, Tinker, Climber, Huntsman, 3 layered Wenger, Super Tinker, Spartan, etc. Almost forgot!! In one of the last seasons, he used a locking SAK, Picnicker if I'm not mistaken. I knew those TV Land Reruns were gonna be useful someday! :D :D

The best part of the whole show was that it showed knives being used in every day situations as a tool, not a weopon.

I was reading some of the old threads and there was some criticism of it being anti-gun, although some of the comments were over the top for what was a pretty innocuous time waster. So Mac never picked up an AK-47 and mowed down 10 bad guys - big deal, there is plenty of popular entertainment for that, besides the whole premise of the show was Mac thinking his way out of certain situations - it was just a TV show, who said it had to be realistic. And who says Rambo is anymore realistic.

I have to say that on the latter seasons of the show, brains were not that extensively used; e.g. scenarios changed, no more 'Reds', etc.

MacGyver basically made Swiss Army Knives O.K. in most sheeples eyes. That is an accomplishment. :)

Ron Hood, my co-moderator and wilderness survival instructor, was a consultant on the MacGyver series. He came up with a bunch of the improvisations that MacGyver would use to get out of trouble. I think he's the one who suggested the use of the SAK as MacGyver's main tool, and built the scenarios around it.

He might be able to answer your question over in the wilderness forum...
